SUMMARY:The 40th Junteenth In The Park Festival Santa Clara County
DESCRIPTION:Please Check the Full Schedule Here: \nhttps://www.sjaacsa.org/juneteenth/home \nThis is the African American Community Service Agency’s 40th year producing the Juneteenth in the Park Festival in San Jose. For over 39 years\, the Juneteenth Festival in San Jose/Silicon Valley has averaged over 6\,000 attendees. Entertainment has ranged from artists like Anthony Hamilton\, Case\, Jaguar Wright\, Jon B.\, Reuben Studdard\, and Brandy to groups like the Drifters with a wide range of local artists from Rap/Hip Hop to R&B\, Gospel\, and Jazz. Our wide variety of food\, artwork\, retailers\, community services and local businesses have been a major draw for event attendees.  The Festival celebrates African American heritage and is an opportunity to educate the community on topics ranging from health to educational and financial literacy. This year\, as the community is re-emerging after a long year of struggle\, celebrating our resilience together will be especially meaningful.

SUMMARY:The Potential of a Guaranteed Income:A Conversation with Four Mayors
DESCRIPTION:The Potential of a Guaranteed Income:\nA Conversation with Four Mayors\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, May 25\, 2021\n10:00 AM – 11:15 AM PT\nONLINE\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTens of millions of Americans were experiencing economic fragility\, living paycheck to paycheck\, before the pandemic. The social safety net\, already frayed\, has not sufficiently changed a common scenario for nearly 40% of Americans unable to afford a single $400 emergency. And while COVID-19 did not create these problems it both highlighted and exacerbated them. \nGuaranteed income advocates have argued that measures to stabilize income outside of employment—an income floor—are a promising means of creating greater economic stability for individuals and families. Support for a guaranteed income dates back decades and includes Martin Luther King Jr.\, who called for a guaranteed income to provide people with the resources necessary to build resiliency. More recently\, following the first mayoral led guaranteed income pilot in Stockton\, California\, dozens of mayors have joined Mayors for a Guaranteed Income. \nJoin New America California on Wednesday\, May 25th at 10:00 A.M. PT / 1:00 P.M. ET for a conversation with four mayors participating in Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (MGI). Together we will discuss what they see as the contours of a better safety net\, the potential of a guaranteed income to support economic empowerment\, the opposition arguments they’ve faced\, and the role they believe cities should play in meeting families’ needs. \nRegistration is free and open to all.\n\n\nSPEAKERS: \nMayor LaToya Cantrell\, @mayorcantrell\nNew Orleans\, LA\n\nMayor Lauren Poe\, @laurenbpoe\nGainesville\, FL\n\nMayor Libby Schaff\, @LibbySchaaf\nOakland\, CA \nMayor Sumbul Siddiqui\, @MayorSiddiqui\nCambridge\, MA \nMODERATOR: \nAutumn McDonald\, @Autumn_McDo\nSenior Fellow & Head of New America CA\n\n\n \n\n\nAbout New America\n\nNew America is dedicated to renewing the promise of America by continuing the quest to realize our nation’s highest ideals. Read the rest of our story\, or see what we’ve been doing recently in our latest Annual Report.

DESCRIPTION:Friends of Wagner Ranch Nature Area & Friends of Orinda Creeks – Earth Day Cleanup\n\nSaturday\, April 17 from 9:00am – 12:30 pm\, and\nSaturday\, April 24 from 9:00am – 12:30 noon\n\nActivity: Walk a section of San Pablo Creek and pick up trash. \n\nRegister online and sign waiver. Waiver will be sent out with the instructions after they sign up.\nMeet at the location of the cleanup. We will need to figure out how many in each section of the creek\, or if we need more sites.\nWe will bring disposable masks\, trash bags\, and disposable gloves. Recommend that people bring work gloves and a reacher if they want.\nWear shoes that can get wet/muddy. Bring a reusable water bottle.\nWe need a FWRNA/FOC person with each group\, at least 2 groups per day so 4+ from FWRNA/FOC. If we get lots of signups we may need more FWRNA/FOC volunteers.\n\nCelebrate Earth Day with a creek cleanup!\nPlease celebrate Earth Day with the Friends of Wagner Ranch Nature Area (FWRNA) and Friends of Orinda Creeks (FOC) as we clean up trash in the San Pablo Creek.  Our goal is to eliminate as much trash in the riparian area as possible.   Bring your whole family (Age 5+) and enjoy a day helping Nature. \nWe will start with a very brief introduction to these two non-profits and clean-up instructions.  Then we will break into groups with each group getting a different section of the creek.  There will be representatives of FWRNA/FOC working with each group to answer questions about the creek and restock supplies. \nWe will provide disposable masks\, trash bags\, and disposable gloves.  We recommend that you bring your own work gloves\, and a reacher or other tool to easily pick up trash.  Please wear clothing and shoes appropriate for the work we are doing – shoes and pants that can get muddy (boots/jeans).  Bring a reusable water bottle.  While rain will cancel that day’s activities\, a light mist will not – liquid sunshine. \nSo please show your support for these two wonderful Orinda environmental non-profits and your downtown Orinda creek. \nIf you would like to donate\, please go to: \nFriends of Wagner Ranch Nature Area – https://www.fwrna.org/donate.html \nFriends of Orinda Creeks – https://orindacreeks.org/join%2Fdonate \nTo sign up for the cleanup\, please register through Sign-Up Genius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050449AAA62EA75-earth \nAfter signing up\, we will send you an email with instructions. \nAs Toris Jaeger says\, “May Nature touch you today”.

SUMMARY:PERSONAL LOSS\, PUBLIC LESSONS
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday\, April 18 at 2 pm\, I have the honor of interviewing Bill Tammeus about his extraordinary new book through the courtesy of the Interfaith Center at Miami University. The book is Love: Loss\, and Endurance: A 9/11 Story of Resilience and Hope in an Age of Anxiety. \nAward-winning journalist Bill Tammeus was among those who suffered the personal loss of a relative on 9/11\, a day that continues to twist America and the world in continuing trauma. \nIn this inspiring and hopeful book\, Tammeus takes us to the heart of that gripping drama. He helps us to understand the many sources of religious extremism — and what can be done to stop it. And he invites us to reclaim core values that can help all of us become peacemakers in today’s tumultuous world. \nAs so much changes each day\, may we find clearer vision and greater joy in our times with one another\, virtually and/or in person\, as we gain pleasure in caring for ourselves\, for those we know\, and for humanity on this endangered planet. \nFaithfully\,\nVern \nDonations can be made online here or via postal mail to CRES\, P.O. Box 45414\, Kansas City\, MO 64171. \nA much fuller description and the Zoom link appears on the CRES website here.

SUMMARY:The 14th Annual | 2021 CLGS John E. Boswell Lecture: Lama Rod Owens Speaks on “Love and Rage: The Path to Liberation”
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register for this Lecture!\nIn our present day\, when a politics of anger infuses every institutional and cultural sphere\, Lama Rod Owens\, author of Love and Rage: The Path of Liberation Through Anger\, will explore a radical re-envisioning of this timely topic as he addresses\, in particular\, those who feel called to metabolize or harness their anger for the purpose transformation and change. \nJoin us for this\, our 14th Annual CLGS Boswell Lecture! \nConsidered one of the leaders of the next generation of Dharma teachers\, Lama Rod Owens has a blend of formal Buddhist training and life experience that gives him a unique ability to understand\, relate\, and engage with those around him in a way that is spacious and sincere.  His gentle\, laid-back demeanor\, and willingness to bare his heart and soul make others want to do the same. \nLama Rod was officially recognized by the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism after receiving his teaching authorization from his root teacher\, the Venerable Lama Norlha Rinpoche when he completed the traditional 3-year silent retreat program at Kagyu Thubten Chöling Monastery (KTC) outside of New York City.  It was during this time that he dealt with years of past pain and trauma and found forgiveness and compassion for himself: he views this as a critical step before one is able to help others. \nSince coming out of retreat\, Lama Rod has completed his Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree at Harvard Divinity School.  He also practices\, studies\, and teaches secular mindfulness and is a teacher with Inward Bound Mindfulness Education (iBme)\, where he is also a faculty member for the organization’s teacher training program.  Lama Rod is deeply engaged in social change activism and is co-author (with Rev. angel Kyodo williams and Jasmine Syedullah) of the book Radical Dharma\, Talking Race\, Love and Liberation. \n \n

SUMMARY:Drag & The Divine: An ONLINE Lavender Lunch with Mama Celeste
DESCRIPTION:Click here for a Zoom link for this event!\nThe music! The wine! The headdresses! \nNo\, we’re not just talking about Midnight Mass at the Vatican.  We’re talking about drag! From ancient shamans to Purim celebrations\, drag performance has always had a place in spiritual traditions. And for many queer people\, drag and nightlife culture is an important way of accessing the kinds of rituals and practices that are central to any sacred community. \nMama Celeste\, a Unitarian Universalist-raised preacher’s kid turned glamorous drag impresario\, will speak about the history of queer performance as a method of manifesting the divine\, as well as the many roles that performance plays within religious cultures. \nMama Celeste  (they/them) is the cofounder of Oaklash: The Bay Area’s Drag and Queer Performance Festival.  Celeste is the drag alter ego of Grey Tartaglione\, a filmmaker and queer advocate who currently works as the Sr. Communications Officer at MPact\, a gay men’s sexual health and human rights organization based in Oakland. Often irreverent and (hopefully) humorous\, Mama Celeste has been seen at venues throughout the Bay Area\, Los Angeles\, New Orleans\, Texas\, Miami and New York. \nVIDEO BIBLIOGRAPHY: We invite you to view Mama Celeste’s Rules of Drag before taking part in this Lavender Lunch!
