SUMMARY:2019 New Mexico Interfaith Immersion Trip -- Teen Interfaith Leadership Council Of Santa Clara County
DESCRIPTION:Teen Interfaith Leadership Council Of Santa Clara County \nMission Statement \nThe Teen Interfaith Leadership Council seeks to engage and inform teenagers about issues of social justice through acts of charity and advocacy. The Council will consist of sophomores\, juniors and seniors (who have already been involved previously) from various religious traditions. The Council will engage in meaningful service\, interfaith dialogue and advocacy activities that address issues of poverty and social injustice while promoting the common good in Santa Clara County. The emphasis will be on mutual respect and understanding and interfaith dialogue will be emphasized\, not conversion. \nThe Council Core team will consist of approximately 12 teens from Jewish\, Muslim\, Zoroastrian\, Hindu\, Buddhist and Catholic/Christian or other religious backgrounds. The Core Team will be recruited in the late winter and early spring. The term for the Council will be July through April-May and meet once a month. \nFormation Experience for Core Team \nThe TLC (Teen Interfaith Leadership Council) will participate in an annual retreat/immersive experience in New Mexico for five days. This immersion experience is intended to create community and to foster interfaith understanding\, while performing meaningful service. The formation experience will focus on the Native American culture in New Mexico with special emphasis on service\, interfaith dialogue\, and discovering shared religious values regarding faith and justice. \nFormation Immersion Experience: July 8-July 12\, 2019 (orientation on July 7) \nFee Upon Acceptance: $100.  Includes airfare\, housing and food. Northern New Mexico is one of the most culturally distinct areas of the United States. It is the home of both ancient Native American communities and towns founded by Spanish settlers long before the inception of the United States. The group will travel to Northern New Mexico and will learn about the ancient Indian Pueblos there. Work may include working on organic farms and contributing to land and cultural restoration efforts in local communities. We will also visit a variety of religious traditions in Santa Fe such as a Hindu Ashram\, Zen Buddhist Center\, Sikh Temple\, a Catholic Church\, a Synagogue and various others. \nThe Teen Interfaith Youth Council will be joined by approximately 4 teen members of the Shinnyo-en Buddhist order from various parts of the country. They are also part of the Buddhist community represented by the Foundation that underwrites the trip costs. Two students will also join from the Interfaith Youth Council of Orange County. \nThis trip is a partnership between the Shinnyo-en Buddhist Temple\, the Shinnyo-en Foundation and the Teen Interfaith Leadership Council of Santa Clara County \nWho can apply?   Current high school sophomores and juniors may apply. Your religious leader must recommend you and he/she will certify that you are a member in good standing in your religious tradition. SUMMARY:Drawdown EcoChallenge - Team SiVIC Council
DESCRIPTION:Come join the team SiVIC Council for the Drawdown EcoChallenge coming April 3-24\, 2019! \nWhat is the EcoChallenge?\nEcoChallenge is an environmental organization that believes the solution to the planet’s biggest challenges lies in the power of collective action. It is part of a suite of educational and engagement offerings by the Northwest Earth Institute\, a nonprofit organization based in Portland\, Oregon. \nEcoChallenge gives us the tools and inspiration to reduce our impact on the planet and contribute to a healthy\, vibrant and sustainable future – while engaging our community and having fun in the process. EcoChallenge has been changing the habits and lives of participants across the world since 2010. \nThey challenge us to choose actions to reduce our impact on the environment and stick with it for the duration of the challenge. Each of us designs our Challenge and sets a goal that stretches our comfort zone and makes a difference for us\, our community and the planet. \nWhy take the Drawdown EcoChallenge?\nThe Drawdown EcoChallenge is an opportunity to change our lives for good. Common wisdom says it takes at least 21 days to change a habit: if we can stick with a new behavior for 21 days in a row\, we’re a lot more likely to keep it up forever. EcoChallengers share their progress and earn points for taking action. The combination of collective inspiration\, camaraderie and friendly competition makes change a little easier — and a lot more fun. \nAND participating is FREE! You just need an email address. SUMMARY:Annual Surjit Singh Lecture in Comparative Religious Thought and Culture -- Interfaith Youth Core
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Eboo Patel at the Graduate Theological Union on Tuesday\, March 19th. The annual Surjit Singh Lecturefosters interreligious and cross-cultural communication and understanding. \nDr. Patel will be the featured speaker this year and will discuss a path forward that keeps faith with the historic identity of seminaries and divinity schools and serves a rapidly changing society characterized by marginalization\, tribalism and deep difference. \nThis free event will take place at 7:30pm at Zaytuna College (2401 Le Conte Avenue\, Berkeley\, CA 94709). A reception will follow in the GTU Richard S. Dinner Boardroom (2400 Ridge Road\, 3rd Floor). For more information and to register\, please click here.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEboo Patel \nEboo founded Interfaith Youth Core on the idea that religion should be a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier of division. He is inspired to build this bridge by his identity as an American Muslim navigating a highly religiously diverse social landscape. For over fifteen years he has worked with governments\, social sector organizations\, and college and university campuses to help make interfaith cooperation a social norm.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Water Is Life: Marking World Water Day March 15 -- WILPF
DESCRIPTION:Water is Life Water is everywhere. What is our relationship to it? \nWater is Life Water is everywhere\, in our bodies\, in our world. Water is the original source of life and all life contains water. Of all the water on our world only 2.5% is freshwater. And of that 69% is in glaciers\, 30% in groundwater and only one third of one percent (.3%) in renewable supplies in lakes and waterways. So little. And yet we pollute it with inadequate sanitation\, with industrial and military waste and with our lack of care in using water as a dumping ground. \nRowan Fairgrove and Patrick Ferraro will discuss local\, regional and global water issues and then\, using Appreciative Inquiry we will discuss our relationship to water in small groups. \nThis is one of US WILPF’s solidarity events to commemorate World Water Day on March 22. We are marking World Water Day a week early\, on March 15. \nhttps://www.wilpfsanjose.org/recent-activity/2019/3/2/water-is-life-marking-world-water-day
