SUMMARY:SiVIC Annual Assembly and Forum on October 13th at 2:30pm\, Jain Center
DESCRIPTION:Annual Assembly\nand Forum \nSunday\, October 13\, 2019\n2:30pm-4:30pm\nJain Center of Northern California\n722 S Main St\, Milpitas\, CA 95035 \nIt has been 9.5 years since the Inaugural Assembly in March of 2011 for SiVIC! Although Board Members and subscribers have come and gone\, we continue on in our quest to help make Silicon Valley/Santa Clara County a more just and compassionate society. Several of us who were on the original committee to create SiVIC are still on the Board and hope to grow SiVIC in the coming years. \nPlease join us on Sunday\, October 13\, 2019 at 2:30pm for our Annual Assembly at the Jain Center of Northern California\, 722 S Main St\, Milpitas\, CA 95035. The agenda includes singers from the LDS community\, a video of the Teen Interfaith Council trip to New Mexico and a student to tell a personal story about their time on the Council\, plus two Forum panels who will speak to “Mindfulness in Faith Traditions”\, and of course some snacks to help us keep our attention on the activities. Note: the Jain Center asks attendees not to bring any of their own food into the Center. \nWe ask that you RSVP early (like right now!) at RSVP@sivicouncil.org to enable us to set up for the Assembly appropriately and so we won’t be nervous about the number of attendees. This is a time for everyone who is connected to SiVIC (or who wants to learn about us) to come and be a part of our celebration and to meet and greet others who believe in making the world\, or at least our County\, a better place for all to live and worship. \nRSVP Link: https://forms.gle/kkzeKv8TUe8zrogS8

SUMMARY:08/20 (Tue) Interfaith Vigil on the 400th Anniversary of the Slave Trade
DESCRIPTION: Sankofa*  – Pilgrimage Marking the 400th Anniversary of the Arrival of Enslaved Africans \n*Sankofa – “We must reach back to reclaim that which is lost in order to move forward.”\n-from the Akan people of Ghana \nAugust 20 marks the 400th anniversary of the introduction of the slave trade into the English American colonies.  On that date in 1619\, a captured Portuguese slave ship\, bound for Mexico\, was brought to the Royal Virginia Company colony at Jamestown and the first African slaves were put up for sale.  Jamestown was an Anglican (Episcopal) settlement.  Almost every denominations which came to set roots on these shores would be implicated in participating or condoning the slave trade until the rise of the abolitionist movement at the end of the 1700s.  Therefore the Church carries responsibility for the institution of this horrendous event. The impact\, the root of racism that began on this date\, continues to have staggering effects on our nation\, including what we see in the news media every day. \nThe Episcopal Parish of the Holy Family will join St John Vianney Roman Catholic parish\, Immanuel Church\, Southern Baptist and other Protestant churches and faith traditions in a pilgrimage marking this pivotal event in our nation’s history\, soul\, and culture.  It begins at Holy Family\, 5038 Hyland Ave at 7:00 pm for a Service of Repentance and Reflection and then proceed to Immanuel\, 467 N White Road.  All members are invited to this observance of  Sankofa.  For further information contact Fr. Jerry Drino jdrino@gmail.com\, 408-806-4506.

The Council will consist of sophomores\, juniors and seniors (who have already been involved previously) from various religious traditions. The Council will engage in meaningful service\, interfaith dialogue and advocacy activities that address issues of poverty and social injustice while promoting the common good in Santa Clara County. The emphasis will be on mutual respect and understanding and interfaith dialogue will be emphasized\, not conversion. \nThe Council Core team will consist of approximately 12 teens from Jewish\, Muslim\, Zoroastrian\, Hindu\, Buddhist and Catholic/Christian or other religious backgrounds. The Core Team will be recruited in the late winter and early spring. The term for the Council will be July through April-May and meet once a month. \nFormation Experience for Core Team \nThe TLC (Teen Interfaith Leadership Council) will participate in an annual retreat/immersive experience in New Mexico for five days. This immersion experience is intended to create community and to foster interfaith understanding\, while performing meaningful service. The formation experience will focus on the Native American culture in New Mexico with special emphasis on service\, interfaith dialogue\, and discovering shared religious values regarding faith and justice. \nFormation Immersion Experience: July 8-July 12\, 2019 (orientation on July 7) \nFee Upon Acceptance: $100.  Includes airfare\, housing and food. Northern New Mexico is one of the most culturally distinct areas of the United States. It is the home of both ancient Native American communities and towns founded by Spanish settlers long before the inception of the United States. The group will travel to Northern New Mexico and will learn about the ancient Indian Pueblos there. Work may include working on organic farms and contributing to land and cultural restoration efforts in local communities. We will also visit a variety of religious traditions in Santa Fe such as a Hindu Ashram\, Zen Buddhist Center\, Sikh Temple\, a Catholic Church\, a Synagogue and various others. \nThe Teen Interfaith Youth Council will be joined by approximately 4 teen members of the Shinnyo-en Buddhist order from various parts of the country. They are also part of the Buddhist community represented by the Foundation that underwrites the trip costs. Two students will also join from the Interfaith Youth Council of Orange County. \nThis trip is a partnership between the Shinnyo-en Buddhist Temple\, the Shinnyo-en Foundation and the Teen Interfaith Leadership Council of Santa Clara County \nWho can apply?   Current high school sophomores and juniors may apply.
