Poetry can give witness to social injustices or show us how to live mindfully and compassionately. Poetry is therapeutic. For those who are hurting\, poetry has the power to heal. Many people begin writing poetry as part of a healing process. By writing about what has injured our spirit in the past and about how we feel about ourselves presently\, we can diminish suffering and begin to rediscover joy. This course will explore how writing poetry can inspire not only us\, but others\, how it can increase well-being\, and how it can be used to teach tolerance\, understanding\, and compassion\, including compassion for the earth and all living things. Click here to learn more about the course and register. \nGlobal Read: Teaching for Purpose\nApril 7; 7:00am PT\nIn Teaching for Purpose\, Heather Malin explores the idea of purpose as the purpose of education and shows how educators can prepare youth to live intentional\, fulfilling lives. The book highlights the important role that purpose—defined as “a future-directed goal that is personally meaningful and aimed at contributing to something larger than the self”—plays in optimal youth development and in motivating students to promote the cognitive and noncognitive skills that teachers want to instill. Based on a decade of research conducted at the Stanford University Center on Adolescence and infused with the engaging voices of purposeful youth\, Teaching for Purpose offers a fresh\, inspirational guide for educators who are looking for new ways to support students to succeed not only in school\, but in life. Register for this webinar.

SUMMARY:03/26\, 03/31 Spirituality in a Time of Crisis -- FB Live Interfaith Panel Series
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has affected all of us in ways that we would not have imagined just a few months ago. As we all work to cope with this challenge\, we are offering a three-part series titled Spirituality in a Time of Crisis. This interfaith series\, featuring female religious leaders as panelists in recognition of Women’s History Month\, will discuss how to take a step back\, reflect\, and understand not only our current situation and the world outside but also ourselves and those we love. Join us in reflection on March 24th\, March 26th\, and March 31st on the ING Facebook page. To receive updates on the series\, register below! \nThursday\, March 26th 7:30 – 8:30 PM PST: Building and Inspiring Fellowship and Community in a Time of Crisis\nIn times of crisis\, news reports are full of stories about neighbors and strangers going out of their way to share food\, rescue pets\, locate loved ones\, and help rebuild what has been lost. In our second panel\, we seek to understand how religious traditions contribute to the displays of compassion\, altruism\, and creative solution-seeking that blossom when disaster strikes communities. \nSpeakers: ING Executive Director Maha Elgenaidi (Muslim)\, Rabbi Amy Eilberg (Jewish)\, Lakshmi Subramanian (Hindu)\, Reverend George Anne McDonnell (Christian)\, and Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi (Buddhist). Facilitator: ING Bay Area Director Ishaq Pathan. \nTuesday\, March 31st 5:00-6:00 PM PST: Reflecting on Gratitude and Faith in a Time of Crisis\nReligious traditions can teach us a lot about the importance of gratitude as a foundation of our life\, even—or perhaps especially—in times of crisis. By funneling our emotions into positive action\, we grow our empathy with others. In our third and final installment of this series\, we learn helpful techniques that allow us to slow down and recognize and give thanks for all the blessings in our lives. \nSpeakers: ING Content Manager Ameena Jandali (Muslim)\, Rabbi Melanie Aron (Jewish)\, Sheila Mohan (Hindu)\, Dianne Muller (Christian)\, and Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi (Buddhist). Facilitator: ING Bay Area Director Ishaq Pathan.

SUMMARY:10th Anniversary World Interfaith Harmony Week\, Feb. 1-7
DESCRIPTION:The 10th Anniversary of the United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week starts on February 1\, 2020 and continues until February 7th. \nBuilding Bridges Across Boundaries\nWorld Interfaith Harmony Week is an annual event observed during the first week of February. \nWorld Interfaith Harmony Week was proclaimed by the General Assembly in resolution A/RES/65/5 adopted on 20 October 2010. In the resolution\, the General Assembly\, points out that mutual understanding and interreligious dialogue constitute important dimensions of a culture of peace and establishes World Interfaith Harmony Week as a way to promote harmony between all people regardless of their faith. \nRecognizing the imperative need for dialogue among different faiths and religions to enhance mutual understanding\, harmony and cooperation among people\, the General Assembly encourages all States to spread the message of interfaith harmony and goodwill in the world’s churches\, mosques\, synagogues\, temples and other places of worship during that week\, on a voluntary basis and according to their own religious traditions or convictions. \nFor more information\, click here

SUMMARY:SiVIC Annual Assembly and Forum on October 13th at 2:30pm\, Jain Center
DESCRIPTION:Annual Assembly\nand Forum \nSunday\, October 13\, 2019\n2:30pm-4:30pm\nJain Center of Northern California\n722 S Main St\, Milpitas\, CA 95035 \nIt has been 9.5 years since the Inaugural Assembly in March of 2011 for SiVIC! Although Board Members and subscribers have come and gone\, we continue on in our quest to help make Silicon Valley/Santa Clara County a more just and compassionate society. Several of us who were on the original committee to create SiVIC are still on the Board and hope to grow SiVIC in the coming years. \nPlease join us on Sunday\, October 13\, 2019 at 2:30pm for our Annual Assembly at the Jain Center of Northern California\, 722 S Main St\, Milpitas\, CA 95035. The agenda includes singers from the LDS community\, a video of the Teen Interfaith Council trip to New Mexico and a student to tell a personal story about their time on the Council\, plus two Forum panels who will speak to “Mindfulness in Faith Traditions”\, and of course some snacks to help us keep our attention on the activities. Note: the Jain Center asks attendees not to bring any of their own food into the Center. \nWe ask that you RSVP early (like right now!) at RSVP@sivicouncil.org to enable us to set up for the Assembly appropriately and so we won’t be nervous about the number of attendees. This is a time for everyone who is connected to SiVIC (or who wants to learn about us) to come and be a part of our celebration and to meet and greet others who believe in making the world\, or at least our County\, a better place for all to live and worship. \nRSVP Link: https://forms.gle/kkzeKv8TUe8zrogS8
