SUMMARY:Webinar - Using Non-Violence to Fight Oppression
DESCRIPTION:What started as pockets of unrest and challenge to the status quo is now a far-reaching movement across the United States to put a permanent end to oppression and injustice. \nJoin Supervisor Dave Cortese\, Assembly member Ash Kalra and the Hindu American Foundation for a webinar on how to use non-violence to fight oppression\, drawing on the lessons of Mahatma Gandhi and other champions of civil rights. \nSamir Kalra\, Managing Director of the Hindu American Foundation\, will share how the Hindu American Foundation incorporates the Gandhian concept of Ahimsa (non-violence) as a guiding principle in the work they conduct. The HAF lesson plan will be discussed to show how it can be used by educators and parents to empower the youth to examine the world around them and to advocate for equality and peaceful solutions. \nRegister by Clicking: www.tinyurl.com/HAFWebinar \n To be discussed during this webinar: \n\nWhat are the systems of oppression and bias operating overtly and covertly that continue to permit the exclusivity of race?\nHow can we use our voices and passion to effectively make the world a better place to live?\nWhat are the lessons we can learn from the revolutionaries of peace\, including Mahatma Gandhi\, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Cesar Chavez?\n\nThere is a role for each and every one of us in the fight for social change. SUMMARY:Forum Series on Racism - Open Wide Your Hearts - By Santa Teresa Church
DESCRIPTION:Observing the unprecedented level of protests demanding racial equality\, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd\, Santa Teresa Church is calling all Catholic Christians and especially\, our parishioners\, to educate ourselves about racism. \nOur parish will be offering an program via Zoom\, based on the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops’ Document – “Open Wide Your Hearts” addressing racism and the need to eliminate it. Each session will be about 90-minutes and offer opportunities to learn\, ask questions\, share experiences\, pray\, sing\, hear scripture\, and reflect. \nRacism is not easy for most of us to talk about\, know what to say about it and\, to be truthful\, even want to talk about it at all. We aim to make this series a safe place to explore our thoughts\, attitudes\, and emotions and faith beliefs about this touchy subject. We urge you to seriously consider joining us as we begin this faith journey. \nThese two sessions on September 23 and September 30 at 6:45PM are part of a series but can still help us open our hearts. \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nZoom Meeting ID: 828 3612 1256\nPasscode: 479199

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:A MIGHTY FORCE FOR JOY  Global Celebration of Compassion \nAUGUST 14-15; 5:00 pm – 5:00 pm Pacific Time \nWe hunger for peace and we need to hear good news.  On August 14-15\, the Charter for Compassion webithon will be offering both.  We will delve into a little history to reflect on the road we have traveled.  There will be stories\, poems\, songs and presentations from partner organizations\, individuals who have supported the Charter as artists and musicians and certainly from the frontlines of our compassionate community and city initiatives.  There is a lot of positive energy that is being shared in the world and our 24-hour webithon is just a preview of what is happening near and far.  We want to offer you moments of reflection\, joy and perhaps a nudge to get involved locally to spread compassionate action locally so its threads can spread globally. \nOf course\, we want to make the webithon free for all\, but we also want to entice you to contribute to keeping the work of the Charter for Compassion on-going.  We will be asking for donations throughout the 24-hours\, but only through placards that will appear on your screen to remain you about the possibility of contributing.  There will be a chat box on Facebook going through the 24-hours.  Let us hear from you.  Please tell your friends\, colleagues\, organizations to which you are close to share the link. Most of the spots you will see are pre-recorded since we don’t have the vast capability to technically host live presentations\, but we assure you that will not diminish the power of the moment.  Looking forward to your presence on August 14-15 and your support.  Register now. \n

SUMMARY:Announcement: Healing Racism\, Baha'is San Jose
DESCRIPTION:The Baha’is of San Jose have continued to hold regular devotional\, educational and consultative gatherings on Healing Racism in America and would like to invite participation from the broader faith community. \nThey are the third Friday of each month in a Zoom conference and include prayers\, reflection on the nature of racism\, the principles of justice and racial unity\, and consultation on action we can take as individuals and as members of a wider community. \nHere is the copy from our website (www.sanjosebahai.org): \n“Be anxiously concerned with the needs of the age ye live in and center your deliberations on its exigencies and requirements.” — Baha’u’llah \n“Know ye not why We created you all from the same dust? That no one should exalt himself over the other. Ponder at all times in your hearts how ye were created. Since We have created you all from one same substance it is incumbent on you to be even as one soul\, to walk with the same feet\, eat with the same mouth and dwell in the same land\, that from your inmost being\, by your deeds and actions\, the signs of oneness and the essence of detachment may be made manifest.” – Bahá’u’llah \nBuilding on the Healing Racism in America seminar held in February\, the Baha’is of San Jose are hosting a monthly prayer circle for the healing of racism in our country and community. Please join us to pray and contemplate practices we can adopt in our lives and in our community to further the oneness of humanity. \nDue to the current health crisis\, we will be hosting these events online the third Friday of every month beginning Friday\, July 17 at 7:30 pm. \nThe link for the gathering is: \nZoom Link:\nhttps://bit.ly/sjraceamitydevotionals

SUMMARY:ING Panel and SiVIC Forum: Responding Collectively to Ahmaud Arbery’s Murder
DESCRIPTION:  \nA recent video capturing the murder of a young man out for a jog has sparked national outrage. More than two months after the shooting\, the father and son responsible for this travesty have finally been arrested and charged with the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. Yet this is not the first and is not likely to be the last in a long series of similar cases.  The history of anti-Black racism and its resultant atrocities\, while egregious\, bears similarities to histories of racism against other groups in the United States\, including Indigenous Peoples\, Latinx Americans\, Asian Americans\, Jewish Americans\, and Muslim Americans. What can we learn from Ahmaud’s case\, and how do we respond both collectively and individually to counter bigotry\, racism and violence against young black men in particular and against all marginalized communities generally? Join us on Facebook for a panel discussion and calls to action by representatives from these communities speaking about this timely and critical topic. \nThis panel is cosponsored by Silicon Valley Interreligious Council (SiVIC) and the Islamic Networks Group. \nModerator: ING Executive Director\, Maha Elgenaidi \nSpeakers: Dr. Mansa Bilal King (Morehouse College)\, Shannon Rivers (Indian Health Center – Santa Clara Valley)\,  Dr. Hien Do (San Jose State University)\, Dr. Marcos Pizarro (San Jose State University)\, Rabbi Melanie Aron (Shir Hadash Synagogue)\, Ishaq Pathan (Islamic Networks Group)\, and Rev. Ray Montgomery (PACT-SJ). \nThis will be a Facebook Live event under the Islamic Networks Group – ING.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/ing.org/
