Our 2020 Visionary Aqeela Sherrills possesses an indomitable spirit which moves him to transform the hearts\, minds\, and actions of those around him. We can’t wait for you to get to know him! \nAqeela asks\, “what is happening that is preventing us from experiencing joy?” To live in peaceful community\, the safety\, dignity\, and joy of every member of our communities must be valued\, cherished\, and appreciated. Communities around the world instead often experience limited\, biased\, and violent public safety strategies that regularly exacerbate rather than reduce harm and trauma. Aqeela steadfastly explains there is a point of entry for the public to play a key role in public safety. Current systems of law enforcement cannot be the single point of contact. We need to reimagine public safety to not only reduce violence but also to create a true presence of safety. As Aqeela fervently demonstrates\, we need to build compassion and understanding into our systems.
