SUMMARY:Keep the Dream Alive
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the signing of the United Nations Charter in San Francisco 1945\, The United Nations Association Of San Francisco (UNA-SF) will co-host a free and historic event that will include speakers\, educational workshops\, and a special concert\, “The Way Chose You” inspired by Dag Hammarskjöld’s spiritual journal “Markings\,” and performed by the Swedish Choir Kloster Vocalis and other performers.\n\nThe 15th Anniversary of the United Religions Initiative will also be folded into this event\, which will be held at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. The event will hold up the Sustainable Development Goals and encourage a season of peace education about UN values from June through October. It will also incorporate artistic gifts honoring the depth and global commitments of the late United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld. The gathering will be a step in a journey of peace making in order to keep the dream alive. SUMMARY:The Path to Peace Through Interfaith Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Gerald Grudzen\, President and Founder of Global Ministries University\, will speak on “New Models of Interfaith Dialogue and Education in the US\, South Asia\, and Africa.” \nGlobal Ministries University has pioneered diverse types of interfaith and intercultural education programs in the US\, Bangladesh\, Thailand\, and Kenya\, East Africa. Many of these programs have been developed in collaboration with the Hizmet Movement. We will discuss these new models that have brought greater understanding and cooperation among diverse faith communities. We plan to have some of our staff in Kenya\, where we are planning major educational programs in Nairobi and Mombasa\, participate in the presentation via Skype. \nThe program will be available via streaming over the internet. \nDinner will be served. DESCRIPTION:County Supervisor Cindy Chavez hit the ground running as soon as she was elected in July 2013. She immediately initiated efforts to: \n\nImprove county government transparency by regulating lobbyists\nCombating the scourge of human trafficking with a commission she co-chairs with the Sheriff and District Attorney\nImproving public transportation.\n\nHer public service career has been about putting people and their neighborhoods first\, making lives better through innovative\, visionary and thoughtful policies. She represents Central\, South and East San Jose\, a district that is a microcosm of the ethnic and economic diversity of Santa Clara County. She chairs the Board’s Children\, families and Seniors Committee and serves on the Public Safety and Justice Committee. \nBefore election to the Board of Supervisors\, she led the nonprofit social justice organization Working Partnerships USA\, which led the community campaign to raise San Jose’s minimum wage. \nDuring her two terms on the San Jose City Council – including two years as Vice Mayor – she helped win City funding for the Children’s Health Initiative\, which made our county the first in the nation to ensure health coverage to virtually every child who lives here. \nCindy lives in downtown San Jose with her husband and son. \nDinner will be served.
