SUMMARY:From Fear to Friendship: Interfaith Relations in a Time of Suspicion
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rev. D. Andrew Kille\, Ph.D.\, Chair of Silicon Valley Interreligious Council. \nPrejudice and fear of unknown others is nothing new in the American experience. Time after time\, suspicion directed toward one group or another has complicated the interreligious encounter. What impact do negative statements made by presidential candidates or local governmental figures make on interfaith relations? What positive efforts are being made to bring people and communities together\, and how can individuals get involved in promoting a more just and compassionate world for all?

SUMMARY:International Women’s Day: Human Trafficking in the Bay Area
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \nRuth Silver Taube\nRuth Silver Taube has a employment and labor law practice with her husband in San Jose. An adjunct professor\, Ruth also does pro-bono work at the South Bay Law Workers Ctr. at Santa Clara University. Ruth has won numerous awards for her community service mentoring law students and workers rights leadership. \nPerla Flores\nPerla Flores is the Division Director of Community Solutions\, a comprehensive human services agency serving Santa Clara and San Benito Counties. Since 1972\, this nonprofit agency has provided many wellness and recovery-based services for all ages\, including violence and crisis hotlines. \nInternational Women’s Day (IWD)\, originally called International Working Women’s Day\, is celebrated on March 8 every year. In different regions the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect\, appreciation\, and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic\, political\, and social achievements. In some regions\, the day became simply an occasion for people to express their love for women similar to a Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. In other regions\, however\, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong\, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. \nThe 2016 theme for International Women’s Day is “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality.” The United Nations observance on 8 March will reflect on how to accelerate the 2030 Agenda\, building momentum for the effective implementation of the new Sustainable Development Goals. It will equally focus on new commitments under UN Women’s Step It Up initiative\, and other existing commitments on gender equality\, women’s empowerment and women’s human rights. – See more at: www.unwomen.org/en/news/in-focus/international-womensday \nSponsored by Silicon Valley United Nations Association

SUMMARY:Ramadan Open House
DESCRIPTION:Ramadan is the name of the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar. During the blessed month of Ramadan\, Muslims all over the world abstain from food\, drink\, and other physical needs during the daylight hours. Ramadan is a special month for Muslims because the Quran was revealed during this month.  For Muslims\, Ramadan is a time to practice self-restraint; a time to cleanse the body and soul from impurities and re-focus one’s self on the worship of God. \nMosques around the country hold an Open House during this month and invite neighbors\, friends\, co-workers and local officials. The open house is typically centered around sunset when the fast is broken. At an open house\, guests join their fellow Muslim citizens to get a brief overview of Ramadan and its importance to Muslims\, followed by a breaking of the fast. The fast is typically broken by eating a date and drinking some water or juice. Guests can observe the Muslims offering their sunset prayer in congregation\, followed by a sumptuous dinner and conversation with their hosts. \nPlease RSVP to OpenHouse@wvmuslim.org.
