SUMMARY:Discussion on Ways to Support Immigrants\, Refugees\, Muslims and Others
DESCRIPTION:Is your congregation looking for ways to provide support and solidarity with immigrants\, refugees\, Muslims and others who are threatened at this time in our nation’s history?  Faith communities on the Peninsula are invited to a presentation by The Rev. Deborah Lee of the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity to help congregations and individuals discern and find concrete ways to engage in sanctuary — a public\, corporate commitment to walk alongside immigrants\, mixed-status families and refugees to uphold dignity\, due process and full acceptance into the life of our society through protection\, support and advocacy. Congregations make different choices about how they are willing and able to join this effort. There are four ways congregations can demonstrate their solidarity and commitment to sanctuary. \n\nAdvocacy\nJoining Networks of Protection and Rapid Response\nAccompaniment of Immigrant Families or Youth in Urgent Situations\nProviding Physical Sanctuary for Someone Facing Final Deportation\n\nCongregations not able or ready to offer physical sanctuary can actively assist other congregations by providing hospitality\, spiritual support and advocacy with a person in sanctuary. \nRev. Lee and the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity are part of the National Sanctuary Movement and can provide important information as well as help network with other local congregations. \nEveryone is welcome to this open discussion on ways to become involved.

SUMMARY:The Religious Character of American Patriotism (Fred Edwords)
DESCRIPTION:As we face a strongly divided nation\, populated by those with opposing concepts of our national identity\, history\, and ideals\, it’s time to take an honest look at our traditions and answer some hard questions. SUMMARY:Nihonmachi Annual San Jose Day of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:In the days following the attack on Pearl Harbor\, the FBI rounded up thousands of Japanese immigrants who were detained without charges. Then\, on February 19\, 1942 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066\, forcing 120\,000 Japanese Americans into concentration camps. The Commission on the Wartime Relocation and Incarceration of Civilians concluded that this action was a result of “race prejudice\, war hysteria\, and a failure of political leadership.” \nThe 37th Annual San Jose Day of Remembrance event takes place on the 75th anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066. The 2017 event carries the theme\, “Stand Up To Hate.” Hundreds of people will gather together at this annual event not only to remember the great civil liberties tragedy that occurred 75 years ago\, but also to reflect on the rising tensions that are building within our communities today and what we can do to build bridges of trust\, respect\, and friendship. \nFeatured Speaker: Samina Masood\, the Executive Director of Silicon Valley FACES. The mission of FACES is to build communities free of bias\, bigotry\, bullying\, and violence. FACES recently hosted “Meet a Muslim” programs\, diversity training workshops\, and a Black Lives Matter discussion. \nFeatured Speaker: Congressman Mike Honda\, Congressman from 2001 to 2017. Former Congressman Honda was incarcerated at the Amache internment camp. He recently wrote about his concerns over today’s rising tide of fear and bigotry in an op-ed for Reuters\, “When my Japanese-American family was treated as less than human.” \nCultural Performance: ASWAT Ensemble\, the Bay Area’s Premier Arab Music Ensemble.\nCultural Performance: San Jose Taiko\, San Jose Japantown’s cultural ambassadors. \nSan Jose Day of Remembrance The Day of Remembrance is an event that aims to bring different communities together in order to build trust\, respect\, and understanding among all people and to renew our pledge to fight for equality\, justice\, and peace. \nThe event is free and open to the public. \nFor more information call 408-373-0817\, email at info@sjnoc.org.

SUMMARY:Community of Faith Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:Interfaith Cooperation is Essential for Peace: Testimonies of Interfaith Friends \nRev. Mark Denni has been pursuing his own unique brand of Interfaith activism since he stumbled upon a meeting of the Hayward Area Inter-Faith Forum back in 2002 and found that there were amazing and faithful people of all types who were actually interested to learn about him and his faith. But this is not about him\, it is about the Interfaith fellow travelers he met along the way and with whom he cultivated friendships over the years. The program will consist of these special guests responding to questions crafted in the spirit of Appreciative Inquiry. \n$5 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Learn About Baha'i
DESCRIPTION:Santa Teresa Inter-Faith Committee Invites you to come and learn about the Bahá’í Faith Our Speaker will be Summer Henderson. \nThe Bahá’í Faith began with the mission entrusted by God to two Divine Messengers—the Báb and Bahá’u’lláh in Persia. The Báb\, the Herald of the Bahá’í Faith\, appeared in the middle of the 19th century\, announcing a second messenger to come. Bahá’u’lláh—the “Glory of God”—is the Promised One foretold by the Báb and all of the Divine Messengers of the past. Bahá’u’lláh delivered a new Revelation from God to humanity.

SUMMARY:What Is at Stake for Economic Justice in 2016?
DESCRIPTION:What Is at Stake for Economic Justice in 2016? Inequality in Global\, National\, and Local Perspective \nGrowing income inequality and the stagnation of middle-class incomes over recent decades have been prominent themes in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. What are the causes\, and what can be done? \nIn this talk\, William Sundstrom will start by taking a step back from the U.S. setting to provide some global perspective on income inequality and growth. In contrast with the case of the United States and many other developed countries\, the “global middle” has actually experienced substantial income growth since the 1980s. Might both trends have a common cause? And if so\, is it realistic to view economic justice as a common—rather than a competing—good?

SUMMARY:Exploring the Shadow
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Shadow with Rob Preece\n\nThe shadow\, according to Carl Jung\, grows as we learn to suppress into the unconscious what is not acceptable in ourselves. He recognised that the degree to which we try to be “good” so that we are acceptable determines the depth of the shadow. How do we reconcile this psychological reality in the process of trying to become “good” Buddhists where we are taught to abandon what is unwholesome and cultivate what is wholesome?\nRob Preece has been a practicing Tibetan Buddhist for the past 40 years. He was a founding member of Manjushri Institute in the UK and lived there until 1980 when he went into retreat above Dharamsala on the guidance of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche.\nReturning to the west in 1985 he began to train as a Psychotherapist at the Centre for Transpersonal Psychology in London\, a Jungian based psychotherapy. Since that time he has had a busy psychotherapy practice and has taught many workshops on comparative Jungian and Buddhist Psychology. More recently his work has shifted from psychotherapy to spiritual mentoring.
