Grudzen has served as President of Global Ministries University since 2001 and has developed graduate interfaith education programs in collaboration with universities and research institutes in the United States\, Africa\, Turkey\, India\, and Thailand. Grudzen earned his Ph.D. in the history of Christianity and Islam from Columbia University.  He received a John Templeton award in 2003 for the development of the first scientific curriculum by Christian and Muslim scholars for the first major universities in Europe. He did this research in collaboration with the Ian Ramsey Center at Oxford University. In 2010 Grudzen co-led the largest American academic delegation ever sponsored by the US State Department for interfaith and intercultural dialogue with faculty members ‘at several Egyptian Universities throughout Egypt including Al Azhar University in Cairo\, the leading Sunni Muslim education center in the world. \nBeginning in 2012\, Grudzen and Global Ministries Universities undertook a major effort to combat religious extremism in the coastal areas of Kenya where there had been frequent terrorist incidents.  The project brought together religious leaders and educators from both the coastal region and throughout Kenya to train these leaders in interfaith dialogue and methods of conflict resolution.  The success of this program led to its integration  with the Tangaza University Institute for Interreligious Dialogue and Islamic Studies in 2019. In 2021 Grudzen and his wife\, Marita Grudzen\,  co-chaired the US Hub for a three-day interfaith conference on Pope Francis’ encyclical\, Fratelli Tutti\, co-sponsored with Tangaza Univesity and other Christian and Muslim universities in Kenya and Indonesia in collaboration with the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue at the Vatican.  Over 3000 participants took part in this conference from 15 different countries. A second international\, interfaith conference is scheduled for February of 2023. Grudzen has authored or co-authored several books on the role of interfaith dialogue and collaboration in promoting peace and reconciliation across the world. \nAbout Marita Grudzen: \nMarita Grudzen\, MHS\, is Associate Director Emerita and a founding member of the Stanford Geriatric Education Center\, a national center in ethnogeriatrics within Stanford University School of Medicine. Ms. Grudzen was co-recipient with Chaplain Bruce Feldstein\, MD\, of the Templeton Award(2001-06) for the medical school required curriculum they developed\, Spirituality and Meaning in Medicine. Ms. Grudzen chaired a qualitative study of diverse healing practices in six ethnic minority populations in the Bay Area which was translated into health professional educational programming. She also developed a relationship of trust with the Afghan leadership in Fremont\, CA during a series of three focus groups she co-led with the Afghan elder women’s community. Most recently\, Marita co-developed the curriculum for the Fremont Community Ambassador Program for Seniors\, and 25 hour Hospital to Home Transition training for volunteers from the Ethnic Minority Senior Services Consortium of San Jose\, CA. Marita has received an international award from the Prime Minister of Turkey for her contribution to the First International Care Congress in Istanbul from May 2-8\, 2005. \nSince August of 2011\, every year Ms. Grudzen with her husband have co-developed\, implemented\, evaluated and revised a 40 hour Interfaith Leadership Program in partnership with Christian\, Muslim and African Indigenous Religious leaders in Kenya. Recruiting local expert and community leaders as co-presenters they returned every August until the current Covid era and maintain communication through the year with their interfaith partners through Skype and email.

SUMMARY:The 14th Annual | 2021 CLGS John E. Boswell Lecture: Lama Rod Owens Speaks on “Love and Rage: The Path to Liberation”
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register for this Lecture!\nIn our present day\, when a politics of anger infuses every institutional and cultural sphere\, Lama Rod Owens\, author of Love and Rage: The Path of Liberation Through Anger\, will explore a radical re-envisioning of this timely topic as he addresses\, in particular\, those who feel called to metabolize or harness their anger for the purpose transformation and change. \nJoin us for this\, our 14th Annual CLGS Boswell Lecture! \nConsidered one of the leaders of the next generation of Dharma teachers\, Lama Rod Owens has a blend of formal Buddhist training and life experience that gives him a unique ability to understand\, relate\, and engage with those around him in a way that is spacious and sincere.  His gentle\, laid-back demeanor\, and willingness to bare his heart and soul make others want to do the same. \nLama Rod was officially recognized by the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism after receiving his teaching authorization from his root teacher\, the Venerable Lama Norlha Rinpoche when he completed the traditional 3-year silent retreat program at Kagyu Thubten Chöling Monastery (KTC) outside of New York City.  It was during this time that he dealt with years of past pain and trauma and found forgiveness and compassion for himself: he views this as a critical step before one is able to help others. \nSince coming out of retreat\, Lama Rod has completed his Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree at Harvard Divinity School.  He also practices\, studies\, and teaches secular mindfulness and is a teacher with Inward Bound Mindfulness Education (iBme)\, where he is also a faculty member for the organization’s teacher training program.  Lama Rod is deeply engaged in social change activism and is co-author (with Rev. angel Kyodo williams and Jasmine Syedullah) of the book Radical Dharma\, Talking Race\, Love and Liberation. \n \n

SUMMARY:Is Hinduism Nothing More than Caste?
DESCRIPTION:In the Western Imagination\, Caste has come to define Hinduism. And the study of Hinduism by western Academics gets centered on Caste as the only organizing principle of Hinduism. How did this happen? Especially when Caste is not a word that occurs originally in any of the Indian languages? Is Varna and Jati – the words used in Sanskrit the same as Caste? Or is there a subtle but important distinction in meaning\, when these Sanskrit words get mapped into the English word – Caste? \nIn this Webinar\, we will explore this mystery – How did a word “Caste” which does not exist in the Indian vocabulary come to dominate the discourse about Hindu Dharma? We will also introduce the “Orientation to Hindu Studies” course\, where prospective Students can learn how Hindu University of America is reorganizing the Academic Study of Hinduism to represent an authentic Hindu perspective. \n https://bit.ly/3my8oXk

SUMMARY:Discussion on Ways to Support Immigrants\, Refugees\, Muslims and Others
DESCRIPTION:Is your congregation looking for ways to provide support and solidarity with immigrants\, refugees\, Muslims and others who are threatened at this time in our nation’s history?  Faith communities on the Peninsula are invited to a presentation by The Rev. Deborah Lee of the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity to help congregations and individuals discern and find concrete ways to engage in sanctuary — a public\, corporate commitment to walk alongside immigrants\, mixed-status families and refugees to uphold dignity\, due process and full acceptance into the life of our society through protection\, support and advocacy. Congregations make different choices about how they are willing and able to join this effort. There are four ways congregations can demonstrate their solidarity and commitment to sanctuary. \n\nAdvocacy\nJoining Networks of Protection and Rapid Response\nAccompaniment of Immigrant Families or Youth in Urgent Situations\nProviding Physical Sanctuary for Someone Facing Final Deportation\n\nCongregations not able or ready to offer physical sanctuary can actively assist other congregations by providing hospitality\, spiritual support and advocacy with a person in sanctuary. \nRev. Lee and the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity are part of the National Sanctuary Movement and can provide important information as well as help network with other local congregations. \nEveryone is welcome to this open discussion on ways to become involved.

SUMMARY:The Religious Character of American Patriotism (Fred Edwords)
DESCRIPTION:As we face a strongly divided nation\, populated by those with opposing concepts of our national identity\, history\, and ideals\, it’s time to take an honest look at our traditions and answer some hard questions. Do we have a national religion after all? If so\, exactly what is it? And where might it take us? This talk will explore often overlooked aspects of American culture\, allow us to see ourselves as others see us\, and thereby inform the choices we must make for our future. \nFred Edwords is director of planned giving for the American Humanist Association\, an organization he served for fifteen years as executive director and twelve years as editor of its national magazine\, The Humanist.
