SUMMARY:Interfaith Service for Healing
DESCRIPTION:Interfaith Service for Healing the Sufferings We Bear as Individuals\, Families\, Communities\, Nations\, & the World \nWe are all susceptible to suffering in our lives. Any suffering we experience is open to examination; discrimination\, being a victim of the recent floods\, immigration\, and a victim of violence are a few examples. We will ask those in attendance to discuss their suffering with someone else in attendance. We will also ask them to discuss if they have healed\, how they healed\, or\, if not healed yet\, how are they progressing toward healing. Because we are faith groups\, we hope that their examination will reflect an aspect of their faith. \nYour presence with your community will demonstrate our shared belief that we support one another in the suffering and healing of each other and our communities.

SUMMARY:Interreligious Service: Ash Wednesday
DESCRIPTION:An inter-religious prayer service on the Christian feast of Ash Wednesday to lift up our common religious aspiration to have a “Compassionate Community\, “ by way of acknowledging that there are many obstacles that prevent us from realizing Compassion: our very selves and the social realities in our community.  This gathering will mark the beginning of “90 Days of Compassion\,” a period that will encompass multiple religious feasts and traditions that speak to both personal and social transformation that fall between March 1 and June 3. \nThe service will be in two parts:  The first part will be a gathering of persons to hear testimonies\, sacred texts calling for transformation and a reminder of being committed to a Compassionate Community. After the conclusion of this part of the service\, people will be invited to enter the sanctuary of the host community and receive ashes from clergy who are present. Although we are building around the Christian observance of Ash Wednesday\, people of all faith traditions (or none) are welcome to participate as they feel comfortable. \nWe will start in the city hall plaza under the eaves (windy-rain plan in the social hall)\, and then process across the street to First Christian Church for ash distribution.

SUMMARY:Hour of Prayer and Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of the hate mail\, the unconditional messages of love and support we received at the Evergreen Islamic Center\, and continue to receive\, are living proof that love trumps hate. We couldn’t be prouder of our community and of our nation. We are deeply grateful to our neighbors\, strangers\, well-wishers\, various organizations\, and law enforcement and elected officials for emphasizing our common humanity. \nAs a token of our gratitude\, and in an effort to turn a negative event into a positive experience\, we are calling for a community prayer by standing shoulder-to-shoulder in solidarity with one another. We humbly request your presence at our Center for a gathering of forgiveness\, hope\, peace and unity. \nSince we are expecting a large turnout\, we are encouraging you to carpool as parking is limited near our center. All of us at the Evergreen Islamic Center look forward to seeing you at this one-of-a-kind gathering in the Bay Area.

SUMMARY:Yes on 62 Interfaith Service
DESCRIPTION:Download a flyer: yeson62flyer \nBring your friends\, neighbors\, family and co-workers to a spirited gathering in support of ballot proposition 62 which abolishes the death penalty in California. Jews\, Muslims\, Christians\, Jains\, Hindus\, Zoroastrians and others will gather at Trinity Cathedral in San Jose\, to pray together and to sign a joint statement. \nWe are putting our faith into action–acting on our sense of compassion and on our belief in the sanctity of life. We believe there is no crime for which the taking of human life by society is justified\, and that the most egregious crimes should be punished by life in prison without parole. We believe that rather than serving as a deterrent\, the death penalty only serves to degrade and brutalize our society. \nProp 62 replaces the death penalty with a strict life sentence in prison\, and saves taxpayers $150 million per year. Prop 62 inmates will be required to work and pay restitution to victims’ families. It’s time to end this failed system\, and replace it with a more just and responsible approach. \nIf you agree\, please join so our voices in support of proposition 62 will be amplified! \nQuestions: Fr. SUMMARY:A Night of Hope
DESCRIPTION:June 17 will be one year since the tragic shooting at Mother Emmanuel AME Church. On that fateful evening nine innocent people were gunned down in a house of worship because of the color of their skin. The Palo Alto community will gather together to remember this tragedy and pray for the future of race relations in our country. This moment of remembrance and hope is open to all faith communities. \nWhen we talk about race\, I wish I could say that one year after this tragedy we are in better place as a country\, but unfortunately we are not. The current incendiary political rhetoric and the general sense of uncertainty in our country has created an atmosphere where those who operate in fear and hate are flourishing. \nWe as a community need to continue to take a stand. The first way we can do this is to show our unity and come together. As we gather\, we will affirm our unity across our diverse racial\, ethnic\, religious\, and socioeconomic differences. This will serve as a powerful sign to those who traffic in fear and wish for us to be divided. \nPlease join me for a one hour candlelight service. \nHope to see you there!\nRev. Kaloma A. Smith\nPastor\, University AME Zion Church\nPalo Alto\, CA
