SUMMARY:Birds of Longing: An Interfaith Panel
DESCRIPTION:Taking inspiration from exhibiting artist Laurie Wohl’s Birds of Longing: Exile and Memory\, panel participants will speak to the interweaving of words\, beliefs\, and philosophies amongst the Abrahamic religions. Participants include: Wohl\, Maha Elgenaidi from the Islamic Networks Group\, Rev. Dr. D. Andrew Kille editor of Reading Between The Lines\, and Rabbi Me’irah Susan Iliinsky from VITAS Healthcare. \nBirds of Longing interweaves Muslim\, Jewish\, and Christian poetry and spiritual texts from the period of convivencia (co-existence) in Spain (8th-15th centuries)\, and from modern Middle Eastern poets\, particularly Palestinian and Israeli. \nEmphasis is on the common themes and striking parallels between Arabic and Hebrew texts\, similarly rich in their poetry of spiritual love\, an extensive poetry of exile\, and poetry of nostalgia for Andalusia. \nThe project contains Wohl’s weavings\, as well as an audio component which consists of readings in English\, Arabic\, and Hebrew that are interwoven to create a soundscape illustrating the commonality of the Middle Eastern languages. \nAll 2015-2016 art exhibits are made possible\, in part\, by a generous gift from Cookie Addison & Family.\nAll APJCC programming for Cultural Arts is made possible\, in part\, by generous gifts from Sylvia & Leonard Metz\, Doris & Rick Davis\, and Bill Lister.\nThe APJCC is proud to be a part of the Initiative on Jewish Peoplehood\,\nco-funded by the Koret Foundation and the Taube Foundation for Jewish Life & Culture.

SUMMARY:"Being Mortal" Film & End-of-Life Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:We’ll view “Being Mortal\,” a PBS Frontline film\, featuring Dr. Atul Gawande\, physician and writer\, as he presents several families grappling with serious illness and end-of-life choices.  Like Dr. Gawande’s best-selling book\, on which the film is based\, “Being Mortal” explores the relationships between doctors and patients nearing the end of life\, and shows how many doctors\, including Dr. Gawande himself\, struggle to talk honestly and openly. \nAfterwards\, our panelists will discuss topics raised by the film and address ways in which different cultures manage end-of-life care. \nOur facilitator will be 2014 Jefferson-Award Winner\, Patrick Arbore\, EdD\, Founder of The Friendship Line and Director of the Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention and Grief Related Services (CESP)—both programs at Institute on Aging.  Dr. Arbore conducts workshops and and presents lectures\, locally and nationally\, on aging-related subjects. DESCRIPTION:Register at Eventbrite \nPanelists: \nEli Taub: After a long career at Kaiser Permanente as a pediatrician\, Eli retired and is now an active member in many Jewish organizations. He served on the Santa Clara County’s Human Relations Commission and has helped plan the County Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony. Eli attended the University of Michigan and received his M.D. at the University of Chicago. He and his wife have two grown children and three granddaughters. Eli represents the Jewish religion. \nHenry Millstein: Henry holds a Ph.D. in Jewish Studies\, with a focus on Jewish-Christian relations\, from UC Berkeley and the Graduate Theological Union\,  and has taught humanities and history of religion at Stanford\, UC Berkeley\, UC Davis\, and the Graduate Theological Union. He worked for 16 years in language and cultural preservation with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs in Oregon\, where he participated in their traditional religious life. His interfaith experience also includes involvement with Jewish and Buddhist communities. Henry represents the Christian religion. \nMaha ElGenaidi: Maha is the founder of ING and author of training handbooks on outreach for American Muslims as well as training seminars for public institutions on developing cultural competency with the American Muslim community. She has an M.A. in religious studies from Stanford University and received her bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from the American University in Cairo. Maha has been recognized with numerous awards\, including the “Civil Rights Leadership Award” from the California Association of Human Relations Organizations and “Citizen of the Year Award” from the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. Maha represents the Muslim religion.

SUMMARY:To Save a Life: Film and Panel
DESCRIPTION:To kick-off national youth mental health awareness week\, local church groups\, under the leadership of St. Christopher Parish in San Jose\, with the support of NAMI Santa Clara County\, have rallied together to organize a special screening of To Save a Life.  This event is available FREE to all in our community. \nTo Save a Life is the story of all-American teen Jake Taylor\, who seems to have it all. But after a childhood friend’s death\, Jake’s world turns upside down\, and he is forced to make a decision that could change his life forever. To Save a Life is about making unexpected choices and sacrifices\, while having the courage and determination to persevere against all odds. \nAt some point\, every teen has to decide: “What’s my life going to be about?” The film dares to bring that question into their world\, encouraging them to answer it with boldness\, honesty and compassion. \nTo Save a Life has started a movement all across the country. In communities just like ours\, groups are working together to make an organized effort to reach local teens in crisis. Groups like ours are dedicated to offering every teen the opportunity to see this film and hear its powerful message of hope. \nThe film will be screened from 7 until 9 pm\, and a panel will follow from 9 until 9:30 pm.
