SUMMARY:03/26\, 03/31 Spirituality in a Time of Crisis -- FB Live Interfaith Panel Series
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has affected all of us in ways that we would not have imagined just a few months ago. As we all work to cope with this challenge\, we are offering a three-part series titled Spirituality in a Time of Crisis. This interfaith series\, featuring female religious leaders as panelists in recognition of Women’s History Month\, will discuss how to take a step back\, reflect\, and understand not only our current situation and the world outside but also ourselves and those we love. Join us in reflection on March 24th\, March 26th\, and March 31st on the ING Facebook page. To receive updates on the series\, register below! \nThursday\, March 26th 7:30 – 8:30 PM PST: Building and Inspiring Fellowship and Community in a Time of Crisis\nIn times of crisis\, news reports are full of stories about neighbors and strangers going out of their way to share food\, rescue pets\, locate loved ones\, and help rebuild what has been lost. In our second panel\, we seek to understand how religious traditions contribute to the displays of compassion\, altruism\, and creative solution-seeking that blossom when disaster strikes communities. \nSpeakers: ING Executive Director Maha Elgenaidi (Muslim)\, Rabbi Amy Eilberg (Jewish)\, Lakshmi Subramanian (Hindu)\, Reverend George Anne McDonnell (Christian)\, and Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi (Buddhist). Facilitator: ING Bay Area Director Ishaq Pathan. \nTuesday\, March 31st 5:00-6:00 PM PST: Reflecting on Gratitude and Faith in a Time of Crisis\nReligious traditions can teach us a lot about the importance of gratitude as a foundation of our life\, even—or perhaps especially—in times of crisis. By funneling our emotions into positive action\, we grow our empathy with others. In our third and final installment of this series\, we learn helpful techniques that allow us to slow down and recognize and give thanks for all the blessings in our lives. \nSpeakers: ING Content Manager Ameena Jandali (Muslim)\, Rabbi Melanie Aron (Jewish)\, Sheila Mohan (Hindu)\, Dianne Muller (Christian)\, and Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi (Buddhist). Facilitator: ING Bay Area Director Ishaq Pathan.

SUMMARY:Hearts for Justice: Toward Understanding: A Jewish\, Christian\, Muslim Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an interfaith conversation between leaders in the Jewish\, Christian\, and Muslim faiths. Rabbi Sarah Weissman\, the Reverend Matthew Dutton-Gillett\, and Sheikha Maryam Amir will be our featured speakers for this event. \nIn this dialogue\, we are hoping to move beyond the great and formidable edifices of Judaism\, Christianity\, and Islam\, which means also to move beyond the stereotypes that we tend to have about these great traditions. Instead\, we hope to give one another a glimpse into the way in which the sacred stories of these faiths have interacted with and transformed our personal stories\, which is nothing less than a glimpse into what it is that is compelling to each of us as followers in and leaders of our respective traditions. And perhaps… how\, especially in this season where our public discourse seems to be disorienting and divisive\, our traditions invite us into a different way of talking and being together that we find thoughtful and hopeful and helpful in cultivating a heart for justice. We believe that this more personal encounter between our traditions will do more justice to each of them. And\, as you will see\, we will each have something to say not only about what is powerful to us in our own faiths\, but how we understand our faiths to shape our interaction with the world in terms building a world that is more just. \nFollowing the conversation there will be an interfaith community resource fair in Trinity Hall. This event is free and there is childcare avaliable. Tickets are recommended as space is limited. RSVP for childcare is required. \nTickets and more information are avaliable here! \nAbout Our Speakers \nRabbi Sarah Weissman\, Associate Rabbi at Congregation Beth Am. Rabbi Sarah Weissman is an associate rabbi at Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills\, where she has served since 2008. In addition to her pastoral and pulpit duties\, Rabbi Sarah oversees the adult education program and the Interfaith Outreach Committee. Rabbi Sarah and her husband\, Eric Weissman\, are proud parents of a son\, Maverick. \nRev. Matthew Dutton-Gillet\, Rector at Trinity Church in Menlo Park. The Rev. Matthew Dutton-Gillett is the rector of Trinity Church in Menlo Park where he has served since 2009. An Episcopal priest for the past 25 years\, Matthew has served congregations in Missouri\, Illinois\, and Tennesee before coming to California. While deeply rooted in the Christian tradition\, Matthew is interested in the way all religious traditions draw us into narratives and relationships that ultimately seek to transform us. \n Sheikha Maryam Amir\, Instructor at Hikmah Institute. Maryam Amir received her Master’s in Education from the University of California\, Los Angeles\, where her research focused on the effects of mentorship rooted in Critical Race Theory for urban high school students of color. Maryam has memorized the Holy Quran\, has spent the past 12 years studying Islamic scholarship and holds a second degree black belt in the martial arts form Tae Kwon Do. She writes for prominent Muslim sites such as aljumuah.com and virtualmosque.com and tours nationally and intentionally addressing communities on topics such related to spirituality\, social issues and women’s studies.

SUMMARY:SiVIC Annual Assembly\, SiVIC Forum & Stewardship Group
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration of the Silicon Valley Interreligious Council and our work to promote a more just and compassionate community. We’ll also have a guest choir\, awards honoring those people who have helped make SiVIC what it is today and the chance to meet people from across the religious spectrum of Silicon Valley. \nThe county resolution calls upon SiVIC and its Affiliates to form a “Stewardship Group” to further cultivate compassion in the county. Share your thoughts on the role and responsibilities of such a group. \nTopic: What Would a Compassionate County Look Like? \nWHEN: Sunday\, September 24\, 2017\, from 2:30PM- 4:30PM \nWHERE: Santa Teresa Catholic Church\, 794 Calero Avenue\, San Jose \n

SUMMARY:I Am the Other: Countering Stereotypes\, Religious Illiteracy\, and Hate Crimes
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of recent hate crimes against the Hindu\, Muslim\, Jewish\, and Sikh communities\, we’ve witnessed an increase in ignorance and stereotypes that have lead to violent attacks and dangerous misrepresentations that cause great harm to minority communities. Just in the past few months\, a Sikh man in Kent\, Washington was attacked\, while there have been a string of anti-Semitic incidents and bomb threats to Jewish centers across the country. \nMoreover\, the tragic hate crime shooting at a bar in Olathe\, Kansas left one Indian Hindu immigrant dead and another injured. Further exacerbating the situation\, CNN aired the show Believer on March 5th\, the first episode of a series on religion that presented Hinduism in a decontextualized and exoticized manner. Such blatant misrepresentations in the media only adds to the existing religious misunderstandings and stereotypes surrounding Hinduism and other religions. \nJoin the Silicon Valley Interreligious Council (SiVIC) and the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) for a diverse interfaith panel discussion to address the important issues that are currently facing minority religious communities in the U.S. \nCome learn more on how you can help counter stereotypes\, xenophobia\, and hate crimes. \n\nModerator: Mihir Meghani M.D.\, Board Member\, SIVIC and Hindu American Foundation\nPadmavathy Mana\, HAF Associate Director\, West Coast\nDiane Fisher\, Board Member\, SiVIC and Jewish Community Relations Council Chair\nSabuhi Siddique\, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community\, Vice Chair of Human Relations Commission in Santa Clara County; 2018 San Jose City Council Candidate\nKavneet Singh\, Board Member\, Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund\n\nTemple tour and lunch will be available at 12.30 pm. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Wisdom of Our Elders: Looking Back to Go Forward
DESCRIPTION:The Multiregion of the United Religions Initiative is offering the first webinar in the Sankofa Webinar Series: “Wisdom of Our Elders: Looking Back to Go Forward.” \nJoin us for a conversation with our three interfaith elders about lessons learned. URI is a global grassroots interfaith network that cultivates peace and justice by engaging people to bridge religious and cultural differences and work together for the good of their communities and the world. Imagine the wisdom our elders possess\, and the life experiences they will share to offer participants an opportunity to be inspired and recommit themselves to their passions for interfaith networking\, bridging differences and making a difference in the world! \nSankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana.  The literal translation of the word and the symbol is “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.” The symbol for Sankofa is based on a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward with its head turned backwards. There must be movement and new learning as time passes. As this forward march proceeds\, the knowledge of the past must never be forgotten. \nOur presenting elders will be: Bishop William E. Swing\, Founder and President of URI and author of A Bishop’s Quest; Joy Jinks\, leader of the SAASE Cooperation Circle\, the NOWTIME Radio CC\, and author of Dynamic Aging: I Intend to Live Forever. So Far…So Good!; and PK McCary of Think Peace International\, Inc. CC and author of the Black Bible Chronicles. \nFull information and registration here.

SUMMARY:What Is at Stake for Gender Justice in 2016? Rethinking Gender and the Politics of Possible
DESCRIPTION:What Is at Stake for Gender Justice in 2016? Rethinking Gender and the Politics of Possible \nDiscussions of gender and gender-related concerns are ubiquitous in the landscape of the 2016 election and yet in many ways remain bound by certain narrative frames. \nIn this talk\, Professor Sharmila Lodhia will offer an analysis of a series of anticipated and unanticipated ways in which ideas about gender have entered contemporary law and politics inviting pause to consider what a “common good” enshrined in concepts like equality\, justice and rights even looks like within a transnational landscape characterized by distinct histories\, contexts and societal norms. Professor Lodhia argues that when undertaking advocacy interventions in the arena of gender justice\, whether on a local or global scale\, we must remain self-reflexive and consider not only the particular visibilities but also particular vulnerabilities within mainstream movements. \nStephanie Wildman will respond\, drawing on her essay on Gender In/Sight to suggest frames for processing the spoken and unspoken gender-based assumptions that pulsate through the news.

SUMMARY:A Conversation about Israeli-Palestinian Peace Prospects
DESCRIPTION:A conversation about Israeli-Palestinian peace prospects\, with Maen Rashid Areikat\, Ambassador to the Palestinian Delegation to the United States\, and Jeremy Ben-Ami\, Founder & President of J Street. \nThe Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the most complex and polarizing conflicts in modern history.  Nearly seventy years after the foundation of Israel and fifty years since the beginning of the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank territories\, the struggle between Israelis and Palestinians seems to be as far as ever from a resolution.  How can Israeli and Palestinian leaders move toward a sustainable peace?  Can the US and the international community help to bridge gaps and bring the two sides together? \nJoin us for a conversation with these very special dignitaries\, about the prospects for achieving peace and why it matters so much to the US and the world. \nMaen Rashid Areikat is originally from Jericho.  He was appointed Ambassador to the Palestinian Delegation to the United States by President Mahmoud Abbas.  He has overseen the Negotiations Affairs Department of the PLO in Ramallah\, providing legal\, policy\, communication and technical support to Palestinian negotiating teams. \nJeremy Ben-Ami’s great-grandparents were among the first settlers in Petah Tikva 130 years ago\, and his grandparents were one of the founding families of Tel Aviv.  He is the founder and President of J Street\, a pro-Israel\, pro-peace American nonprofit that seeks a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. \nModerator Luther Jackson is an expert in Silicon Valley labor market research and analysis\, and is well known as a leader\, facilitator and communicator. \nCo-sponsored by J Street\, Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley\, and First Unitarian Church of San Jose. \nMore information and registration.
