DESCRIPTION:American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley (ALFSV)\, People Acting in Community Together (PACT)\, Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC)\, Silicon Valley Interfaith Council (SiVIC)\, and Islamic Network Group (ING) are coming together to bring to you an opportunity to hear from leading civil rights activist Eric Ward. Eric Ward is a national expert on the relationship between hate violence and preserving democratic institutions\, governance\, and inclusive societies and he brings nearly 30 years of expertise in community organizing and philanthropy. SUMMARY:ING Panel and SiVIC Forum: Responding Collectively to Ahmaud Arbery’s Murder
DESCRIPTION:  \nA recent video capturing the murder of a young man out for a jog has sparked national outrage. More than two months after the shooting\, the father and son responsible for this travesty have finally been arrested and charged with the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. Yet this is not the first and is not likely to be the last in a long series of similar cases.  The history of anti-Black racism and its resultant atrocities\, while egregious\, bears similarities to histories of racism against other groups in the United States\, including Indigenous Peoples\, Latinx Americans\, Asian Americans\, Jewish Americans\, and Muslim Americans. What can we learn from Ahmaud’s case\, and how do we respond both collectively and individually to counter bigotry\, racism and violence against young black men in particular and against all marginalized communities generally? Join us on Facebook for a panel discussion and calls to action by representatives from these communities speaking about this timely and critical topic. \nThis panel is cosponsored by Silicon Valley Interreligious Council (SiVIC) and the Islamic Networks Group. \nModerator: ING Executive Director\, Maha Elgenaidi \nSpeakers: Dr. Mansa Bilal King (Morehouse College)\, Shannon Rivers (Indian Health Center – Santa Clara Valley)\,  Dr. Hien Do (San Jose State University)\, Dr. Marcos Pizarro (San Jose State University)\, Rabbi Melanie Aron (Shir Hadash Synagogue)\, Ishaq Pathan (Islamic Networks Group)\, and Rev. Ray Montgomery (PACT-SJ). \nThis will be a Facebook Live event under the Islamic Networks Group – ING.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/ing.org/

SUMMARY:03/26\, 03/31 Spirituality in a Time of Crisis -- FB Live Interfaith Panel Series
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has affected all of us in ways that we would not have imagined just a few months ago. As we all work to cope with this challenge\, we are offering a three-part series titled Spirituality in a Time of Crisis. This interfaith series\, featuring female religious leaders as panelists in recognition of Women’s History Month\, will discuss how to take a step back\, reflect\, and understand not only our current situation and the world outside but also ourselves and those we love. Join us in reflection on March 24th\, March 26th\, and March 31st on the ING Facebook page. To receive updates on the series\, register below! \nThursday\, March 26th 7:30 – 8:30 PM PST: Building and Inspiring Fellowship and Community in a Time of Crisis\nIn times of crisis\, news reports are full of stories about neighbors and strangers going out of their way to share food\, rescue pets\, locate loved ones\, and help rebuild what has been lost. In our second panel\, we seek to understand how religious traditions contribute to the displays of compassion\, altruism\, and creative solution-seeking that blossom when disaster strikes communities. \nSpeakers: ING Executive Director Maha Elgenaidi (Muslim)\, Rabbi Amy Eilberg (Jewish)\, Lakshmi Subramanian (Hindu)\, Reverend George Anne McDonnell (Christian)\, and Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi (Buddhist). Facilitator: ING Bay Area Director Ishaq Pathan. \nTuesday\, March 31st 5:00-6:00 PM PST: Reflecting on Gratitude and Faith in a Time of Crisis\nReligious traditions can teach us a lot about the importance of gratitude as a foundation of our life\, even—or perhaps especially—in times of crisis. By funneling our emotions into positive action\, we grow our empathy with others. In our third and final installment of this series\, we learn helpful techniques that allow us to slow down and recognize and give thanks for all the blessings in our lives. \nSpeakers: ING Content Manager Ameena Jandali (Muslim)\, Rabbi Melanie Aron (Jewish)\, Sheila Mohan (Hindu)\, Dianne Muller (Christian)\, and Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi (Buddhist). Facilitator: ING Bay Area Director Ishaq Pathan.

SUMMARY:SiVIC Annual Assembly and Forum on October 13th at 2:30pm\, Jain Center
DESCRIPTION:Annual Assembly\nand Forum \nSunday\, October 13\, 2019\n2:30pm-4:30pm\nJain Center of Northern California\n722 S Main St\, Milpitas\, CA 95035 \nIt has been 9.5 years since the Inaugural Assembly in March of 2011 for SiVIC! Although Board Members and subscribers have come and gone\, we continue on in our quest to help make Silicon Valley/Santa Clara County a more just and compassionate society. Several of us who were on the original committee to create SiVIC are still on the Board and hope to grow SiVIC in the coming years. \nPlease join us on Sunday\, October 13\, 2019 at 2:30pm for our Annual Assembly at the Jain Center of Northern California\, 722 S Main St\, Milpitas\, CA 95035. The agenda includes singers from the LDS community\, a video of the Teen Interfaith Council trip to New Mexico and a student to tell a personal story about their time on the Council\, plus two Forum panels who will speak to “Mindfulness in Faith Traditions”\, and of course some snacks to help us keep our attention on the activities. Note: the Jain Center asks attendees not to bring any of their own food into the Center. \nWe ask that you RSVP early (like right now!) at RSVP@sivicouncil.org to enable us to set up for the Assembly appropriately and so we won’t be nervous about the number of attendees. SUMMARY:I Am the Other: Countering Stereotypes\, Religious Illiteracy\, and Hate Crimes
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of recent hate crimes against the Hindu\, Muslim\, Jewish\, and Sikh communities\, we’ve witnessed an increase in ignorance and stereotypes that have lead to violent attacks and dangerous misrepresentations that cause great harm to minority communities. Just in the past few months\, a Sikh man in Kent\, Washington was attacked\, while there have been a string of anti-Semitic incidents and bomb threats to Jewish centers across the country. \nMoreover\, the tragic hate crime shooting at a bar in Olathe\, Kansas left one Indian Hindu immigrant dead and another injured. Further exacerbating the situation\, CNN aired the show Believer on March 5th\, the first episode of a series on religion that presented Hinduism in a decontextualized and exoticized manner. Such blatant misrepresentations in the media only adds to the existing religious misunderstandings and stereotypes surrounding Hinduism and other religions. \nJoin the Silicon Valley Interreligious Council (SiVIC) and the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) for a diverse interfaith panel discussion to address the important issues that are currently facing minority religious communities in the U.S. \nCome learn more on how you can help counter stereotypes\, xenophobia\, and hate crimes. \n\nModerator: Mihir Meghani M.D.\, Board Member\, SIVIC and Hindu American Foundation\nPadmavathy Mana\, HAF Associate Director\, West Coast\nDiane Fisher\, Board Member\, SiVIC and Jewish Community Relations Council Chair\nSabuhi Siddique\, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community\, Vice Chair of Human Relations Commission in Santa Clara County; 2018 San Jose City Council Candidate\nKavneet Singh\, Board Member\, Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund\n\nTemple tour and lunch will be available at 12.30 pm. \nREGISTER HERE
