SUMMARY:Film Screening: Human
DESCRIPTION:CCARE will host a film screening of HUMAN\, a film by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Following the screening\, there will be a brief discussion and Q&A. \nAbout HUMAN \nHUMAN is a collection of stories and images of our world\, offering an immersion to the core of what it means to be human. Through these stories full of love and happiness\, as well as hatred and violence\, HUMAN brings us face to face with the Other\, making us reflect on our lives. From stories of everyday experiences to accounts of the most unbelievable lives\, these poignant encounters share a rare sincerity and underline who we are – our darker side\, but also what is most noble in us\, and what is universal. Our Earth is shown at its most sublime through never-before-seen aerial images accompanied by soaring music\, resulting in an ode to the beauty of the world\, providing a moment to draw breath and for introspection. \nHUMAN is a politically engaged work which allows us to embrace the human condition and to reflect on the meaning of our existence.

SUMMARY:Radical Grace Film
DESCRIPTION:“Radical Grace” is a documentary about U.S. nuns who were reprimanded by the Vatican for their “radical feminism.” Be captured by this story of three fearless nuns who risk their place in the Church to follow another higher calling: social justice. \nOne sister takes on Church patriarchy\, another finds hope in the former prisoners she counsels\, and the third launches a cross-country Nuns on the Bus tour\, leveraging her newfound fame to spotlight social needs. These sisters “bring humor and down-to-earth grit to an epic battle for justice\, equality and the dignity of women” (Gene Siskel Film Center). \nFollowing their struggles through the election of Pope Francis\, Radical Grace captures a period of dramatic transformation as the Catholic Church grapples with the modern word. \nSJSU students\, faculty and community members will be inspired and challenged by the message of these brave nuns that question authority\, seek equality\, while illustrating that social justice and spirituality are inseparably linked. \nDiscussion will follow. All are welcome!

SUMMARY:"Exodus from the Jungle"
DESCRIPTION:Last December\, the city of San Jose razed the country’s largest homeless encampment located on the banks of Coyote Creek and displaced over 300 homeless people who had created a community neighborhood of tents and makeshift structures they called “the Jungle.” The Jungle’s closure was a heartbreaking scene that made national headlines with its stark contrast of abject poverty amid high-tech wealth. Housing was found for 175 people as part of a pilot project by the city but\, as they watched their belongings bulldozed\, many of the Jungle’s remaining inhabitants tearfully spoke of having nowhere else to go. Since that time\, there has been some criticism among community members that closing the Jungle only dispersed the homeless into their neighborhoods\, and others have continued to advocate for the homeless with the city and county for more permanent housing solutions for all in Silicon Valley. \nA new documentary\, “Exodus from the Jungle\,” tells the story of that December day and the community that will never be the same. We invite you to a showing of the film followed by conversation with some of the homeless community and their advocates. Please come and learn more about the need for housing and the work to create places for everyone here in Silicon Valley. \nSponsored by Building Hope: a mission team of the Willow Glen\, Almaden Hills and Cambrian Park UMCs\, and the Housing for All Alliance in Silicon Valley.
