SUMMARY:SiVIC Annual Assembly and Forum on October 13th at 2:30pm\, Jain Center
DESCRIPTION:Annual Assembly\nand Forum \nSunday\, October 13\, 2019\n2:30pm-4:30pm\nJain Center of Northern California\n722 S Main St\, Milpitas\, CA 95035 \nIt has been 9.5 years since the Inaugural Assembly in March of 2011 for SiVIC! Although Board Members and subscribers have come and gone\, we continue on in our quest to help make Silicon Valley/Santa Clara County a more just and compassionate society. Several of us who were on the original committee to create SiVIC are still on the Board and hope to grow SiVIC in the coming years. \nPlease join us on Sunday\, October 13\, 2019 at 2:30pm for our Annual Assembly at the Jain Center of Northern California\, 722 S Main St\, Milpitas\, CA 95035. The agenda includes singers from the LDS community\, a video of the Teen Interfaith Council trip to New Mexico and a student to tell a personal story about their time on the Council\, plus two Forum panels who will speak to “Mindfulness in Faith Traditions”\, and of course some snacks to help us keep our attention on the activities. Note: the Jain Center asks attendees not to bring any of their own food into the Center. \nWe ask that you RSVP early (like right now!) at RSVP@sivicouncil.org to enable us to set up for the Assembly appropriately and so we won’t be nervous about the number of attendees. This is a time for everyone who is connected to SiVIC (or who wants to learn about us) to come and be a part of our celebration and to meet and greet others who believe in making the world\, or at least our County\, a better place for all to live and worship. \nRSVP Link: https://forms.gle/kkzeKv8TUe8zrogS8

SUMMARY:Water Is Life: Marking World Water Day March 15 -- WILPF
DESCRIPTION:Water is Life Water is everywhere. What is our relationship to it? \nWater is Life Water is everywhere\, in our bodies\, in our world. Water is the original source of life and all life contains water. Of all the water on our world only 2.5% is freshwater. And of that 69% is in glaciers\, 30% in groundwater and only one third of one percent (.3%) in renewable supplies in lakes and waterways. So little. And yet we pollute it with inadequate sanitation\, with industrial and military waste and with our lack of care in using water as a dumping ground. \nRowan Fairgrove and Patrick Ferraro will discuss local\, regional and global water issues and then\, using Appreciative Inquiry we will discuss our relationship to water in small groups. \nThis is one of US WILPF’s solidarity events to commemorate World Water Day on March 22. We are marking World Water Day a week early\, on March 15. \nhttps://www.wilpfsanjose.org/recent-activity/2019/3/2/water-is-life-marking-world-water-day

SUMMARY:Faith Community’s New Ways to Meet Community Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about actions being taken by faith communities to address the current challenges they are faced with. Silicon Valley is fortunate to have many faith communities that have stepped up. The topics will cover immigration changes and support actions (including DACA\, ICE raids\, religious workers visa\, H1B/H4 visa\, etc.)\, unhoused community issues (safe spaces\, faith facilities as sanctuaries\, etc.)\, stereotyping minorities with its impact on bullying and hate\, and refugee resettlement\, to name a few. \nSeveral Faith Leaders will take a lead on the discussion of these topics. There will be plenty of time for everyone to present what they are doing. Our goal is to bring everyone on the same-page\, so we can support each other’s actions and make a bigger impact. \nRSVP: rsvp@sivicouncil.org

SUMMARY:"How to Bring Balance and Compassion to Life" Educational Course
DESCRIPTION:Charter for Compassion Education Institute  is pleased to offer this very special course for only $10\, which is one 10th of its normal fee\, in honor of the Charter Education Institute’s 2nd Anniversary. We are celebrating our second year of working together to make a significant difference through compassion education courses. \nLao-tzu said\, “When you are compassionate toward yourself\, you reconcile all beings in the world.” \n“What I discovered was that life is richer and more productive when it is in balance and includes self-compassion. Simply put\, we can give more to others when we have more to give!” \nThe intention of this course is to help you realize that self-compassion and balance can generate the energy and space you need to contribute your distinctive talents and compassionate action into the world. \nCompassion is like a ribbon that wraps around you and the receiver. You both naturally feel\, at least for a moment\, connected. This connection is reality and compassion enables you to see it. \nBring more compassion into the world by first learning how to bring it to yourself. \nRegistration is now open and the course begins on February 5\, 2018. Register early to insure a spot as space is limited. You may also want to give the course to someone as a gift! \nYou can read more about the course and register here.  \nWe would love to have you join us.

SUMMARY:Release of Know Your Neighbor Curated Educational Content
DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCING RELEASE OF KYN CURATED EDUCATIONAL CONTENT\nwww.ing.org/kyn-content\nDozens of Toolkits\, Resource Collections\, Strategy Guides\, and More Now Available \nThanks to the effort of Islamic Network Group partners in the past two #KnowYourNeighbor campaigns which reached 10 million people — Back-to-School and Share Your Story — we have curated many pieces of educational content on a variety of topics such as lesson plans on different faith traditions\, anti-bullying training\, and programs to foster inclusive schools. \nWe want to highlight the resources of our partners who participated by placing the content into specific subject areas for educators and community members to access and use. All these tools are now available at the Know Your Neighbor content page. \n“These toolkits and other resources represent not only the 90+ members of the Know Your Neighbor coalition\, but also dozens of other organizations who participated in our summer campaigns\,” said ING Interfaith Manager Kate Chance. “Whether you’re a middle school teacher\, a college professor\, a community activist\, or a private citizen\, these educational materials can help you create a more inclusive America.” \nWe invite you to help get these tools into the hands of people who can use them by sharing curated content from the previous Know Your Neighbor campaigns on social media using the hashtag #KnowYourNeighbor. Encourage community leaders\, educators\, parents\, and students to use this material to create more inclusive classrooms and communities.

It navigates through a maze of conflicting information and stereotypes\, then equips Christians with biblical solutions to challenges that have vexed Jewish-Christian relations for over two-thousand years.\n \nThis graduate-level seminar is taught by one of Christianity’s preeminent scholars of Judaism\, and designed for grassroots Christians without formal theological training. All will be informed\, challenged and inspired. \nSessions are October 7\, October 14\, and November 18.More details and registration. \nINSTRUCTOR: Dr. Marvin R. Wilson \nNIV Bible translator and acclaimed author of Our Father Abraham: Jewish Roots of the Christian Faith (made into an award-winning PBS documentary)\, Dr. Wilson is currently Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies at Gordon College. SUMMARY:DACA Update Lunch Session
DESCRIPTION:For Clergy and Faith Leaders: \nDear clergy colleagues\,\n\nI am sure that many of you share my concern about the rescinding of DACA and the ambiguity surrounding the next action of Congress. We are receiving a lot of mixed messages from the media about the future of DACA. This must be unimaginably difficult for the undocumented youth\, and 1 out of every 4 of these youth lives in the state of California.\n\nToday\, at a press conference with Congresswomen Nancy Pelosi\, I saw these undocumented youth in action– they were so inspiring. (See the note below about what happened at the press conference.)\n\nAs clergy and faith leaders\, you are invited to a DACA UPDATE lunch session to hear 1) the latest and most up-to-date political developments around DACA; 2) hear how this issue is part of the larger immigration situation going on in our nation and in our county; 3) and most importantly\, hear the “unofficial story” from a DACA recipient about their experience and how we can follow their lead in this current movement. Luis Angel\, a DACA recipient who is a lawyer and runs a legal firm that provides deportation defense\, will give us his perspective.\n\nWhen: Wednesday\, September 27th\, 11 am – 1 pm\nWhere: Congregational Church of San Mateo\, 225 Tilton Ave\, San Mateo\n\nWhat can we as clergy do to help? How can we be part of a growing movement to protect DACA recipients? How can we support the undocumented youth and listen to their needs? How we be politically astute as we add our moral leadership to these times?\n\nI hope you can attend. We’ll need at least 15 participants. Please RSVP to Amie by Monday the 25th so we can order food for lunch.\nLet’s accompany these undocumented youth on their journey during these difficult times. We are all connected….\n\nGrateful for your peace and justice work\,\n\nPenny Nixon

SUMMARY:Jewish Heritage Celebration- De Anza College
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to experience an interactive overview of Judaism.  We will explore Jewish culture\, diversity\, and history. Some common myths and stereotypes are revealed by way  of discussion\, stories\, and candid questions such as “Who is a Jew?” and “What is Judaism?” Engage in the complexities of a 5\,777-year-old culture that has persevered and contributed to the mosaic of modern day society. Enjoy Jewish culture\, music\, and tastes of food. \nAbout the Trainer:   \nDaryn Michelle Stier’s interest in diversity awareness and the cultural celebration began from childhood and took off when she attended Oberlin College for its social justice and cross-cultural awareness that was an integral fabric of its history and educational approach. There she began SOAR-Students Organized against Racism- in order to have an active student group whose primary purpose was to look at group ethnic and multi-racial communication skills as well as assessment modalities for institutional race awareness. At the University of Michigan\, Daryn got her Masters in Social Work with a focus on Interpersonal Counseling and Community Organization. Daryn discovered an underserved population in the school’s coursework—women—and organized the student body to address the lack of any courses focusing on women in the curriculum. A course on women’s’ issues was developed and is now part of the school’s offerings. Daryn also worked at the University of Michigan’s Counseling Center and served on their Cross-Cultural Counseling Team. \nRegister online \nFunded by DASB Heritage Months-Multicultural Education Funds \nCo-Sponsors: Co-Sponsors include Euphrat Museum of Art\, Black Leadership Collective\, African American Studies\, Intercultural/International Studies Division\, & VIDA \nThis event is ADA accessible.
