SUMMARY:The Potential of a Guaranteed Income:A Conversation with Four Mayors
DESCRIPTION:The Potential of a Guaranteed Income:\nA Conversation with Four Mayors\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, May 25\, 2021\n10:00 AM – 11:15 AM PT\nONLINE\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTens of millions of Americans were experiencing economic fragility\, living paycheck to paycheck\, before the pandemic. The social safety net\, already frayed\, has not sufficiently changed a common scenario for nearly 40% of Americans unable to afford a single $400 emergency. And while COVID-19 did not create these problems it both highlighted and exacerbated them. \nGuaranteed income advocates have argued that measures to stabilize income outside of employment—an income floor—are a promising means of creating greater economic stability for individuals and families. Support for a guaranteed income dates back decades and includes Martin Luther King Jr.\, who called for a guaranteed income to provide people with the resources necessary to build resiliency. More recently\, following the first mayoral led guaranteed income pilot in Stockton\, California\, dozens of mayors have joined Mayors for a Guaranteed Income. \nJoin New America California on Wednesday\, May 25th at 10:00 A.M. PT / 1:00 P.M. ET for a conversation with four mayors participating in Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (MGI). Together we will discuss what they see as the contours of a better safety net\, the potential of a guaranteed income to support economic empowerment\, the opposition arguments they’ve faced\, and the role they believe cities should play in meeting families’ needs. \nRegistration is free and open to all.\n\n\nSPEAKERS: \nMayor LaToya Cantrell\, @mayorcantrell\nNew Orleans\, LA\n\nMayor Lauren Poe\, @laurenbpoe\nGainesville\, FL\n\nMayor Libby Schaff\, @LibbySchaaf\nOakland\, CA \nMayor Sumbul Siddiqui\, @MayorSiddiqui\nCambridge\, MA \nMODERATOR: \nAutumn McDonald\, @Autumn_McDo\nSenior Fellow & Head of New America CA\n\n\n \n\n\nAbout New America\n\nNew America is dedicated to renewing the promise of America by continuing the quest to realize our nation’s highest ideals. Read the rest of our story\, or see what we’ve been doing recently in our latest Annual Report.

SUMMARY:Reimagining public safety\, transforming community\, and sustaining peace
DESCRIPTION:Euphrates Visionaries are individuals striving to make the impossible possible and the idealistic realistic. Our 2020 Visionary Aqeela Sherrills possesses an indomitable spirit which moves him to transform the hearts\, minds\, and actions of those around him. We can’t wait for you to get to know him! \nAqeela asks\, “what is happening that is preventing us from experiencing joy?” To live in peaceful community\, the safety\, dignity\, and joy of every member of our communities must be valued\, cherished\, and appreciated. Communities around the world instead often experience limited\, biased\, and violent public safety strategies that regularly exacerbate rather than reduce harm and trauma. Aqeela steadfastly explains there is a point of entry for the public to play a key role in public safety. Current systems of law enforcement cannot be the single point of contact. We need to reimagine public safety to not only reduce violence but also to create a true presence of safety. As Aqeela fervently demonstrates\, we need to build compassion and understanding into our systems. Dive into the complexities with us\, and learn how you can contribute to the collective work of reimagining public safety for peaceful\, joyful communities. \nWe will open the call with Rev. angel Kyodo Williams\, activist\, author\, and ordained Zen priest. We will then move into a conversation between Euphrates Founder\, Janessa Wilder\, and our 2020 Visionary of the Year\, Aqeela Sherrills. And finally\, Aqeela will take time to respond to the questions\, you\, our community have. \nYou must register to attend this call. Please click here to register and receive the Zoom link. After registering\, you will receive an email providing you with call details. \nWe look forward to sharing space with you on December 11th!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to register for the December 11 call!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to invest in our Visionary of the Year program!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Faith Community’s New Ways to Meet Community Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about actions being taken by faith communities to address the current challenges they are faced with. Silicon Valley is fortunate to have many faith communities that have stepped up. The topics will cover immigration changes and support actions (including DACA\, ICE raids\, religious workers visa\, H1B/H4 visa\, etc.)\, unhoused community issues (safe spaces\, faith facilities as sanctuaries\, etc.)\, stereotyping minorities with its impact on bullying and hate\, and refugee resettlement\, to name a few. \nSeveral Faith Leaders will take a lead on the discussion of these topics. There will be plenty of time for everyone to present what they are doing. Our goal is to bring everyone on the same-page\, so we can support each other’s actions and make a bigger impact. \nRSVP: rsvp@sivicouncil.org

SUMMARY:Special Liturgical Celebrations for the Winter Season
DESCRIPTION:FEAST OF SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS \nSunday\, January 28\, 12:00 noon\, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church\, Waverley at Homer\, Palo Alto: Gregorian Mass – Solemnity of our parish patron saint. \n  \nCANDLEMAS\nFriday\, February 2\, 8:00 p.m\, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church – Candlelight procession and Solemn High Latin Mass in the Extraordinary Form. \nOn Candlemas (Feb. 2)\, a Solemn High Mass (with deacon and sub-deacon) in the Extraordinary Form will be celebrated by Fr. William Morgan\, with a sermon by Fr. Francisco Nahoe\, O.F.M. Conv. The St. Ann Choir will sing the Mass for Three Voices by William Byrd\, Gregorian chants for the feast day\, and a motet by Victoria.\nCandlemas\, forty days after Christmas\, commemorates the presentation of the child Jesus in the temple and the ritual purification of his mother. There the old man Simeon\, recognizing the savior\, uttered the canticle Nunc dimittis\, “Lord\, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace\,” calling the child “a light for the revelation of the gentiles.” And so a ceremony of lights is conducted\, the blessing of candles and a procession with candlelight\, together with the singing of Simeon’s canticle. \nThe Extraordinary Form is the form of the Mass celebrated until 1970\, sometimes known as the Tridentine Mass. Permission for extensive use of this form of the Mass was given by Pope Benedict in his Motu Proprio Summorum pontificum (2007). Although the noon Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas is sung in Latin every Sunday in the Ordinary Form\, this will be only the second time for the Extraordinary Form at St. Thomas since 1970. \n  \nASH WEDNESDAY \nFebruary 15\, 8:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church – Latin Ordinary Form Mass with imposition of ashes\, sung in Gregorian chant with motets.

SUMMARY:Hearts for Justice: Toward Understanding: A Jewish\, Christian\, Muslim Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an interfaith conversation between leaders in the Jewish\, Christian\, and Muslim faiths. Rabbi Sarah Weissman\, the Reverend Matthew Dutton-Gillett\, and Sheikha Maryam Amir will be our featured speakers for this event. \nIn this dialogue\, we are hoping to move beyond the great and formidable edifices of Judaism\, Christianity\, and Islam\, which means also to move beyond the stereotypes that we tend to have about these great traditions. Instead\, we hope to give one another a glimpse into the way in which the sacred stories of these faiths have interacted with and transformed our personal stories\, which is nothing less than a glimpse into what it is that is compelling to each of us as followers in and leaders of our respective traditions. And perhaps… how\, especially in this season where our public discourse seems to be disorienting and divisive\, our traditions invite us into a different way of talking and being together that we find thoughtful and hopeful and helpful in cultivating a heart for justice. We believe that this more personal encounter between our traditions will do more justice to each of them. And\, as you will see\, we will each have something to say not only about what is powerful to us in our own faiths\, but how we understand our faiths to shape our interaction with the world in terms building a world that is more just. \nFollowing the conversation there will be an interfaith community resource fair in Trinity Hall. This event is free and there is childcare avaliable. Tickets are recommended as space is limited. RSVP for childcare is required. \nTickets and more information are avaliable here! \nAbout Our Speakers \nRabbi Sarah Weissman\, Associate Rabbi at Congregation Beth Am. Rabbi Sarah Weissman is an associate rabbi at Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills\, where she has served since 2008. In addition to her pastoral and pulpit duties\, Rabbi Sarah oversees the adult education program and the Interfaith Outreach Committee. Rabbi Sarah and her husband\, Eric Weissman\, are proud parents of a son\, Maverick. \nRev. Matthew Dutton-Gillet\, Rector at Trinity Church in Menlo Park. The Rev. Matthew Dutton-Gillett is the rector of Trinity Church in Menlo Park where he has served since 2009. An Episcopal priest for the past 25 years\, Matthew has served congregations in Missouri\, Illinois\, and Tennesee before coming to California. While deeply rooted in the Christian tradition\, Matthew is interested in the way all religious traditions draw us into narratives and relationships that ultimately seek to transform us. \n Sheikha Maryam Amir\, Instructor at Hikmah Institute. Maryam Amir received her Master’s in Education from the University of California\, Los Angeles\, where her research focused on the effects of mentorship rooted in Critical Race Theory for urban high school students of color. Maryam has memorized the Holy Quran\, has spent the past 12 years studying Islamic scholarship and holds a second degree black belt in the martial arts form Tae Kwon Do. She writes for prominent Muslim sites such as aljumuah.com and virtualmosque.com and tours nationally and intentionally addressing communities on topics such related to spirituality\, social issues and women’s studies.
