SUMMARY:Faith Community’s New Ways to Meet Community Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about actions being taken by faith communities to address the current challenges they are faced with. Silicon Valley is fortunate to have many faith communities that have stepped up. The topics will cover immigration changes and support actions (including DACA\, ICE raids\, religious workers visa\, H1B/H4 visa\, etc.)\, unhoused community issues (safe spaces\, faith facilities as sanctuaries\, etc.)\, stereotyping minorities with its impact on bullying and hate\, and refugee resettlement\, to name a few. \nSeveral Faith Leaders will take a lead on the discussion of these topics. There will be plenty of time for everyone to present what they are doing. Our goal is to bring everyone on the same-page\, so we can support each other’s actions and make a bigger impact. \nRSVP: rsvp@sivicouncil.org

SUMMARY:District One Interfaith Council
DESCRIPTION:Please consider attending our 3rd monthly meeting of the District One Interfaith Council. It will be held on Wednesday\, December 20 from 12 noon to 1:00. \nOur November meeting was hosted\, and lunch provided by Pastor Chris Nallan at the International Christian Center of San Jose. Our deepest thanks. Local faith leaders as well as Rose Dhaliwal from Councilman Chappie Jone’s office and local neighborhood association representatives and service organizations were in attendance. Rabbi Melanie Aron also shared her insights into Interfaith Councils with the group. \nAt our December meeting\, faith leaders took action items to bring area maps\, floor plans and resource lists. The objective is to compile a joint resource list with points of contact in the event of a major disaster or community need. We will also hear more about “Sheltering Workshops” in greater detail. After school intervention in the form of tutoring\, reading and other activity programs will also be further discussed. Also\, the Disaster Preparedness Fair at the LDS Church will be held in March of 2018. \nThank you to all who contributed to our meeting\, and we would love to have more of you join. Perhaps as you see what the other faith leaders in your community are working on\, you too will feel impressed to join with us. \nThe December meeting to be hosted and lunch provided by:\nGene Hunt\n650 Saratoga Ave.\nSan Jose

SUMMARY:A Night of Hope
DESCRIPTION:June 17 will be one year since the tragic shooting at Mother Emmanuel AME Church. On that fateful evening nine innocent people were gunned down in a house of worship because of the color of their skin. The Palo Alto community will gather together to remember this tragedy and pray for the future of race relations in our country. This moment of remembrance and hope is open to all faith communities. \nWhen we talk about race\, I wish I could say that one year after this tragedy we are in better place as a country\, but unfortunately we are not. The current incendiary political rhetoric and the general sense of uncertainty in our country has created an atmosphere where those who operate in fear and hate are flourishing. \nWe as a community need to continue to take a stand. The first way we can do this is to show our unity and come together. As we gather\, we will affirm our unity across our diverse racial\, ethnic\, religious\, and socioeconomic differences. This will serve as a powerful sign to those who traffic in fear and wish for us to be divided. \nPlease join me for a one hour candlelight service. \nHope to see you there!\nRev. Kaloma A. Smith\nPastor\, University AME Zion Church\nPalo Alto\, CA
